Day 3 – Christmas Gifts

Verse: Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
(James 1:17)

This time of year is all about gifts.

It seems like every year, stores put out their holiday displays earlier in the season. It won’t be long before merchants will have year-round Christmas displays.

I admit that while I love my family dearly, and Christmas morning is so much fun watching the excited faces of my 5 children, the thought of all the gift-giving at Christmas is overwhelming to me.

There are years I would love to skip the whole process.

Maybe you can relate.

This passage from James tells us everything we need to know about finding the perfect gift. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father.

God’s presence is the perfect gift.

Prayer: Dear Father, This time of year it’s easy to get caught up in all the busy gift giving. Help me to remember that your presence is the ultimate gift. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

For Discussion:
1. What gift-giving traditions does your family have?
2. This year, how can you be more focused on the gift of God’s presence?

We look forward to your comments and questions below!

1. We open presents one at a time on Christmas morning.
2. Going to church throughout this season will keep me focused on Jesus.

My husband and I only do stockings for each other. We gift fun stuff for each other in our stockings and maybe gift cards to a fav store or restaurant. Others on our gift list get donations to charities in their honor and they've started doing the same for us! We do our Advent devotions together over coffee in the mornings and attend as many Christmas church services and music concerts as possible. Christ is first!

My sister and me normally buy each other clothes and we're not extravagant (we buy them when they are on sale - usually 50-70% off). We buy gifts for some of the neighbor kids in need. This is our Christmas (we love giving gifts to them since they are so appreciative) because we don't have any close relatives except for cousins and we only see 2 of them when we need something. We have bought Christmas gifts for one set of neighbor kids for 14 years and another person that we still call our neighbor kid who is now 47. We also bake cookies and make candy for the neighbors, hair stylist, and the ladies that give me massages.

Reading more scriptures: 1) 1 Chapter of Luke per day from December 1st (you will have the Book of Luke read by Christmas); 2) Healthy Holiday Challenge; 3) Christmas Reflection AND attending regular church services and Christmas Eve Service.

At our family gathering we do the white elephant gifting. We also play a couple games and give out a special gift to winners. I have been trying to do different themes since everyone has other parties to attend and this year it is german in honor of my mother. We are all attempting to make a german dish. Hopefully all goes well.

I have decided to start a Bible study through an online program.
