Do You Hurt the One You Love - Spiritual Growth Encouragement Series

Bible Verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:9-11

“For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not to pour out his anger on us. Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive when he returns, we can live with him forever. So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.”

Reflect and Respond:

Think about your close loved ones today, especially the ones who may get under your skin at times. Ask God to help you see them through His eyes, and to reveal ways for you to love and encourage them rather than criticize.

Father, You have put people in my life to love, but I often find myself criticizing them either in my mind, with my words, or both. Today I pray that You would help me see them in a new light -- the way You see them! Please reveal ways for me to love and encourage them rather than to criticize. I ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Thank You Lord for your word to me on being critical of the ones I love, a fact I cannot deny. But because of Your Word which says that You came in peace and love, let Your Holy Spirit remind me that I am behaving more like You when I build up, rather than criticize and tear down. Amen.

I am struggling with how I’ve hurt my wife and son. I struggle with depression and anxiety. The last two bouts with depression has been the deepest I’ve ever experienced. During those times I’ve hurt them deeply. I’ve asked both to forgive me, but would not blame them if they choose not to.

I used to be this way - thank the Lord that I have gotten better about thinking first and speaking only after asking myself if whatever I wanted to say is true, is hurtful, is necessary, or even really matters.
