Defining Guilt and Shame - Spiritual Growth Encouragement Series - Arnie Cole

Bible Verse: 1 John 1:9

“If we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”

Reflect and Respond:

How does confessing your sins affect your relationship with God? With others?

Father, let me rightly discern when You tell me to change direction, and let me follow You. Let me also discern when I am needlessly hanging on to shame. Help me trust in Your forgiveness and restoration. I pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Thanks for explaining the difference between guilt and shame and for pointing out that guilt is from God but shame is from the evil one. Praise the Lord.
Great message! Thanks Paula.
Marilyn, thank you for the question. I admit I have never been asked this before! Well, I don't know if you need to repent. I would encourage you to search your heart. Ask God to reveal any unconfessed sin and then confess it. We need to repent when we intentionally sin against God. So the shame you felt, you maybe were unaware of the root of it and the truth of guilt vs shame. So now that you do know the difference, you can walk accordingly. I hope this helps!
Yes, insightful. Thank you 😊
Melinda, this is a challenging question! Satan will use your past to trip you up in the present as well as the future. Satan wants us to believe we are still defined by our sins. Jesus frees us from our past and makes us His masterpiece. So though I can't speak directly to the source of the feelings, I can speak to the truth of Scripture. So focus on what God has done. Focus on your new nature and your secured future. I'm praying for you!
David, thanks for wresting with the SGE. I can see how you may struggle with this, but I will try to clear up any confusion. I do not think that Paula was negating your right comments on Scripture. God is not going to tempt us to sin. God will provide a way of escape. And thanks to both our conscience and the Holy Spirit inside of us, we do feel guilt when guilty. Yes, that is conviction as you put it. It's the conviction of guilt. As Christians, we are not guilty in the sense of punishment, but we still are "responsible" for our actions when we sin. When we sin, God graces us out with the conviction of the Spirit to move us to confession, repentance, and fellowship again. As my friend, Pastor Tom said, "Guilt and conviction come from God. Shame comes from Satan. This is why guilt/conviction leads to freedom. Shame leads to slavery.
Thanks for this devotional.
Thanks for this word
Amen Always let me have the radar to recognize and feel the guilt so I may quickly realize, confess and change. Thank you In Jesus name I ask and pray
I liked” let guilt guide you, but never let shame imprison you.”
I have the fellowship align with God and with others.
What Do You Do if You Are Hearing Demons Throwing FALSE Guilt At You For Things You Have NEVER Even Done, Or Have MORE Than Repented Of?
My relationship with GOD is strengthen and becomes more intimate when I confess my sins to HIM because by doing si I show that I trust HIM to do what HIS word says HE will do-- forgive me. I draw closer to GOS when I trust and confide/confess to HIM.

I love how the Spiritual Growth Encouragers and the Bible teaching go hand in hand. Thank you for explaining how guilt and shame are different.
I am afraid I am not encouraged by today’s spiritual growth encouragement. “Guilt is from God”? Why would God give us guilt? Is He not the God who will not allow us to be tempted beyond what is common, and is He not the one who makes the way of escape? Is not the Holy Spirit faithful to do this work before the sin? Guilt is the result of our own action against what God has said or the result of our ignoring the Holy Spirits prompting to take the way of escape. God sets us free of sin and guilt, he does not give us guilt. If God is the giver of guilt, that is discouraging, not encouraging. If by guilt you mean conviction is from God, I can see that. Conviction could easily be seen as the unpleasant gift from God that turns us to repentance. But I cannot be encouraged if God is the author of guilt.
That makes a lot of sense. Guilt is from God and shame is from the evil one. So if I am feeling shame is it a sin? Do I need to repend? Shame is not easy to let go of. Dear Heavenly Father, I feel shame deep within my soul and need the help and forgiveness only you can give me. Show me the way and guide me to the light. In Jesus name I pray this prayer. Amen.
it's the human mind our minds are so wound up with everything we want this is not one of the things we need we need to relink which those tightened shoulders and those tense eyes and those hard noses and those defiance stairs we need to release this to the Lord give it to him and let it stay there Amen
Why do we continue to live like this and take on things that don't belong to us and this is one of them
Good thoughts with no need to remember that
Amen! Thank you for the excellent explanation.
Thank you Lord
