BIBLE: "...give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." (1 Thessalonians 5:18 /ESV)

PRAYER: I must confess, Lord, that sometimes I don't give thanks in all circumstances. Even though you are always present, sometimes my heart wants to shut you out--especially when I hurt. Thank you for loving me anyway. Help me to give thanks at all times. And help me to remember that because of Jesus I can look confidently to the future where there will be no more sorrow and pain. Help me to walk in faith. AMEN.

REFLECT and RESPOND: Do you think that we can force ourselves to give thanks to God when on the inside we are hurting or feeling depressed or miserable? What is the role of faith in being able to give true thanks in everything? Share in the comments.

We look forward to your comments and questions below!

Yesterday it was revealed to me.
Everyday (regardless of the circumstances) is a good day.
God loves us, Jesus died for us so that we can be seen blameless.
Thank God first thing every morning and know it is a good day.

I think the question answers it: It takes faith to give thanks in all circumstances in Christ Jesus! Thanks David for making the point that it is in Christ Jesus, and that this thankfulness is not simply a hollow happiness but an attitude rooted in the perspective of eternal life. Another point is that often as Christians we want to know what God's will is for our lives, and here is one of His wills clearly identified - a thankful heart in all circumstances.

What a great point - to decouple being thankful to God from happiness. I thank God for being so wise as to make that point, and David for delivering it!!
