ReflectIt's now been nearly 2,000 years since Jesus and the disciples walked the earth. And for many centuries, artists of all kinds have attempted to capture these important and memorable moments of the Christian faith in paintings and stained glass.
But how do you begin a relationship with a stained glass saint? One of the values of the Bible is that the men and women presented there are always shown as very human. They laugh, they cry, they disagree with each other and sometimes question God's leading. We see a bit of the real life of Jesus and the disciples in
John 21:6:
"Then he said, 'Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you'll get plenty of fish!' So they did, and they couldn't draw in the net because there were so many fish in it."In this passage we see many ordinary things going on that you and I do every day. Things like going to work and eating breakfast; like being frustrated at putting in long hours with little result; like feeling happiness when a good friend stops by.
Maybe you've seen those beautiful stained glass windows and the saintly figures depicted there and wondered "how can an ordinary person like me ever be useful to God?" The same way the disciples were. Though today they are considered saints, they became that way by hearing Jesus' voice and following Him. And they found that in a relationship with Jesus even ordinary life can be filled with the supernatural.
