You Were Dead - Your Daily Forward Devotional

You Were Dead

January 12

Read Ephesians 2:1-3

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air and the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience-among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

Before you were in Christ, how did you live? Who did you listen to? What influenced your behavior?

There are a lot of dead men walking around in the world right now. No, not physically dead but spiritually dead. Before I was a believer in Jesus Christ, I was just as dead. And so were you.

Paul says that we were dead in our sins. Remember, in the Garden of Eden that God told Adam and Eve that if they disobeyed Him, they would surely die. They did disobey, and mankind has been dead ever since-separated from God and not capable of closing the gap ourselves. After all, dead people cannot do anything at all.

Paul explained that before we followed Christ, we followed the world, we followed Satan, and we followed our flesh. The world influenced us, and we yielded to its pressure to conform. Satan and his demons sought to sway us mainly by lying to us. And the passions of our flesh controlled us. Any desire that our mind conceived and our body craved, we acted on it. No matter how sinful. We were born sinful human beings with a sinful nature. We lived in sin. We could not please God, no matter what we did.

We were “children of wrath.” We were doomed to eternal judgement. Condemned. We could not save ourselves. We were completely lost.

Friends, in order for us to fully appreciate what God has done in our lives, we need to fully understand how utterly sinful, disobedient, and dead we were before we knew Him. We were powerless to save ourselves. We were not even aware that we needed it. We were far from God. Thanks be to God that our story doesn’t end there! Those of us who are in Christ are alive in Him! Hallelujah!

God, I know that before I knew You, I was spiritually dead. Utterly lost and completely incapable of saving myself. I confess my sinful and disobedient ways. And thank You for Your work on my behalf to bring me back to life through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen!

It's my prayer to the Lord too.
"The slate is wiped clean and you get a fresh new start. The guilt of sins you committed in the past is taken away through forgiveness. You never have to worry about your past sins being held to your account, because they are forgiven entirely. Now you have the chance for a complete turnaround; a whole new life; you can put the past behind you." - quoted from a blog from Thomas Nelson. My own note is that we are so grateful and filled with joy that God has forgiven our iniquities that praise is continually on our lips and peace reins in our hearts. We must also remember not to point out someones sins for years after they have already reformed, so that they are not able to reach their full potential for their new life in Christ. Also, do not listen to false gossip from those who are not saved about saved individuals. Although everyone has a post sinful life, some of us have people from our past filled with wrath, malice and revenge and make up false gossip to try and get Christians from accepting the saved person. They are trying to stop someone from leaving their past life and simply moving on. They are manipulative. It is abusive and character defamation. When someone lies and says someone has struggles they do not have or twists everything into something ugly to make someone look bad for the sole purpose of destroying their life it is an evil. Yes, my past had sin, but some people make up much worse than the true past to try and ruin my life. However, Jesus overcomes it all. I pray for everyone to find new life in Christ and find happiness through the joy only He can bring. Then peace will rein so we can all live in harmony the way Christ would want us to, loving one another and building each other up and encouraging each other so we can grow and be the most productive body of Christ possible. “He will again have compassion on us, and will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.” Micah 7:19. “He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.” Colossians 1:13-14. “Then He adds, ‘Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.’” Hebrews 10:17. “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him.” Psalm 103:12-13.
This is excellent teaching! Pastor Nat gives us the truth from God's Word. The liberal gives us lies. How wonderful to receive truth. Thank you God, and Back to the Bible.
Pastor Nat, I'm old now and have read/heard this vs many times. You have explained it in such a honest clear way. It's so useful in using for evangelizing to the lost. t.y.
Reminding me that having our eyes on God , filling our hearts with his promises, makes us lean on his understanding not ours! The song Great is thy Faithfulness is in my heart ❤️
You have presented the gospel and our fallen state well. We as lost dead to God sinners, can do nothing of ourselves to save ourselves. Salvation is of teh Lord, by His grace through faith upon the work of teh Holy Spirit. Thank you.
Lord Jesus you made us to love and glorify your name. In the garden we rebelled and lost our love for you. On the cross your love changed our heart toward you again. I once was lost and now I see. Help me Jesus to see you and love you today so my life may glorify you. Thank you for restoring me for you. Amen
Thank God for giving us another beautiful day and thank you pastor Nat Amen
Lord I once was lost, but now I'm found, was blind, but now I see, is an accurate gospel hyhm that I sing and reflect on. Before I came to Christ, at the age of 9, I remembered seeing how You had worked in other's and I wanted a change in me. I am not where I want to be, but I am not where I used to be. Lord You have brought me from a long long way. I am grateful to You and ask that You continue to keep me and my loved ones in Your hands. I pray this prayer and thank You in the name of Your Son Jesus, Amen.
Thank you Jesus for my salvation and help me to be closer to you, more spirituality.
Amen! Thank you Pastor Nat for reminding me today of my "dead state" before God delivered/rescued me. The following song "sums"it up: "Once I was clothed in the rags of my sin, Wretched and poor, lost and lonely within. But with wondrous compassion, the King of all kings, In pity and love, took me under His wings. Oh, yes, oh yes, I'm a child of the King His royal blood now flows in my veins. And I who was wretched and poor now can sing Praise God, praise God, I'm a child of the King".
Thank you Father for your redeemed my love in sending your Son to save us Thank you that in Him we have forgiveness of sin and life in His name Thank you Jesus for the cross For paying a debt I could not pay The Just for the unjust that you might bring us to God Thank you Lord that you have loosed our bonds Thank you LORD for your wonderful works to the children of men ! Father help me to see others thru your eyes and with your heart in a world that desperately needs Jesus Thank you for the promise of your word and the hope we have in Jesus
Having been born and raised in a Christian household, I don’t remember a time of not knowing Jesus and His saving grace. Nonetheless, knowing Jesus still didn’t stop me from acting like a Son-of-Disobedience in allegiance to this world. Even to this day, I still trip and fall. In Rev 3:19 Christ tell us, “Those whom I love, I rebuke and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent.” Thank you, Jesus, for your undying love and patience with me stay in Your Light.
