Read Matthew 6:22-23
“Your eyes are windows into your body. If you open your eyes wide in wonder and belief, your body fills up with light. If you live squinty-eyed in greed and distrust, your body is a dank cellar. If you pull the blinds on your windows, what a dark life you will have.” (The Message)
Reflect
What is meant by living “squinty-eyed in greed and distrust”?
Why do so many of us lose the day spiritually to the point of never sensing God’s presence and helping others? Why isn’t God’s truth capturing our hearts and minds … and directing our steps? Why do we keep getting stuck spiritually?
The answers are kind of hard to admit … maybe even a little embarrassing for longtime Christ-followers.
The truth is, many of us are confused about Scripture—what it is and how to use it. And many more of us are chopping it up into bits and pieces and reading it through “the colored glasses of opinion,” which can seriously distort God’s heart for us.
Something else is going on, too: A lot of Christ-followers are living “squinty-eyed.” In the New Testament, Jesus calls this a fatal mistake. (See the passage above.)
Christ came to heal the blind—that includes you and me (see John 9). And Jesus tells us, “He who has ears, let him hear,” (Matthew 11:15).
Pray
Lord, open my eyes and ears to You. I want to know You better. Amen.
