What’s Your Motive? - Your Daily Forward Devotional

What’s Your Motive?

July 15

Read Galatians 6:1-2

“Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

According to Paul in today’s verse, what should be our motivation for pointing out the sins of others?

Yesterday, we discussed the issue of judging others. We talked about making sure we are not being hypocritical and that we have dealt with our sins before we point out the sins of others. But the Bible is clear that we are to call out sin and address it. How do we confront the sins of others in a biblical manner?

In today’s verse, Paul told the Galatians that they should have a “spirit of gentleness” when confronting sin and the goal of the confrontation should be restoration. When Paul says “you who are spiritual,” he means believers who are more spiritually mature and are seeking to live according to God’s Word. Christians who are spiritually mature are less likely to be hypocritical in their dealings with the sins of others because they understand what Christ did for them regarding their own sins.

The motivation of our hearts when calling out the sins of others should always be to restore them to the Lord—to bring them back to right living. We should not criticize others for the sake of making ourselves look better. We shouldn’t be motivated by our own self-righteousness. We shouldn’t be motivated by hatred. Rather, because we love our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, we should point out their sin to them because we genuinely desire that they follow the Lord.

In 2 Thessalonians, Paul called some people out for the sin of idleness. These people were willing to take but they were not willing to work. Paul condemned this behavior and reminded them that people who are unwilling to work and contribute positively to the body of believers should not eat. This is how Paul advised the Galatians to deal with the idle people: “If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person, and have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed. Do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother” (2 Thessalonians 3:14-15). Paul was saying to stop financially supporting these people and stop associating with them until they repent and change their ways. But he made an important distinction. The idle believers were not enemies of the Galatians but brothers and sisters in Christ.

Friends, we are commanded to address sin in our own lives and in the lives of others. But our motivation matters. We are sinners ourselves so our goal should not be condemnation but restoration. Because we love our brothers and sisters in Christ, we should warn them of the consequences of their sin. It is not loving to allow someone you care about to persist in sinning against the Lord. Rather, it is loving to gently point out their sin, warn them of the dangers of their sins, and seek to get them back on the right track.

Lord, help me to walk alongside my brothers and sisters who are struggling with sin. You carried the burden of my sin for me, so I want to help others who are burdened with their sins. Help me restore them with a spirit of gentleness rather than condemnation. Amen.

What we must all remember is we are children of Jesus Christ made in The image of God. Jesus tells us to lead with our hearts and His Love in all things. Far to often people point out what they call sin in a way that is very unlike the way Jesus would do. Yes yesterday's devotional does go hand in hand.
That being said before you attempt to call out sin of another "check" yourself first! Being a "Christian" is not a religion, it is accepting The Lord Jesus Christ into our hearts being Batized in The seas of Jesus Blood.
Then living each new Blessed Day building a more open humble honest encouraging intimate relationship with Jesus. If you have read your Bible then studied God's Word it means what? Nothing because we read daily and each day we "learn" more we never stop learning on God's Word or building upon Jesus. Thus just because you think someone sins does not make it so.
When we do go to do so we pray first seeking God's guidance then with open heart love humbleness we say we would like to speak on an issue with that person.
Do not fault with unjust reason but with Love meekness softness kindness. For remember only God has The right to judge us. Always seek God before calling out someone as it is written. To often we find true hypocrisy when other's attempt to do this. God's Commandments are clear, Love God and People. If someone calls me out I'm ready to listen if it is done with Love just as I do for them.

Father Great is Your Faithfulness Your Word is Truth, Lord to often those who teach or should be forget to Love the person hate the sin, Father please Bless us reminder us we worship only You to do as You did and remain to do with we Your children, Lord I Thank You that we are Your Church and Your Church allows everyone in with open arms of Your Love, Please Father remind us to do the same and teach us to become more like You, Thank You Lord I Still Believe Your Word not man's, in Jesus name Amen

Joey my dear brother in Christ. I love what you wrote. Lately I feel like you are just spot on with how I'm feeling, or I can relate to it somehow.

I'm in a "really weird spot" between running towards Jesus and feeling overwhelmed that I'm just running away. I pray he doesn't let me run far. He never usually does.

And I need to remind myself of his promise to always be "near me".....

Sometimes I really don't know how to feel or understand the teachings and/or devotionals....

Like I'm looking at them in all the wrong ways... I wish I could explain it better.

I don't know what to even say to you. I guess thanking you for being my friend is a good place to start. Honestly if it weren't for you, I probably would have cut back so much..... but I enjoy your comments and friendship. I just feel so lost lately and feel JEALOUS all the time.

It's so NOT Christ Like, I know this...so I "say the right things" pretend I'm happy, when inside I'm filled with jealousy and sadness............

I'm sorry to unload on you..... I'm just having a bad time of it lately.... thank you for always being kind and supportive.

Your sister and friend in Christ. 🤗🙏💕

I agree 💯%. I prayed that yesterday ( WHAT A COINCIDENCE!!!) because I also check my own motives for correcting others. My family and brothers and sisters in Christ. I do with gentleness and meekness so that I don't condemn myself as today's teaching verses state. Because sometimes I am hesitant about addressing sin in others that I know should be addressed to them. I am thankful for someone correcting me if I am doing wrong in sin so that I can repent and get back on track with what Jesus teaches in the bible. Thank you for reassuring me to do all things according to God's Word.
