What Evidence Do You Have?

July 16, 2020

Read Galatians 5:22-25

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.”

What evidence of the Holy Spirit do you find at work in your life? What deeds of the flesh do you need to put to death?

I used to lead music for elementary students every Wednesday night. The most requested song to sing was a silly song about the fruit of the Spirit. “The fruit of the Spirit’s not a coconut, if you want to be a coconut, you might as well hear it, you can’t be the fruit of the Spirit. The fruit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control...” It was ridiculous but also so fun to see them joyfully singing and memorizing the fruit of the Spirit at the same time.

The song is true. The fruit of the Spirit is not a coconut, a banana, a cherry, or a grape. The fruit of the Spirit are godly character traits that are evident in the lives of those who belong to God and therefore possess the Holy Spirit.

Earlier in Galatians chapter 5, the apostle Paul lists the deeds of the flesh: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these” (v 19-21). If we are in Christ, these sins ought to be nailed on the cross and put to death in our lives. They are the opposite of the fruit of the Spirit.

For those of us in Christ, the old, sinful self is dead and we have been given a new life. Our sins do not need to have power over us anymore! We need to weed out the deeds of the flesh that remain so the fruit of the Spirit can grow freely in our lives. We are free from the bondage of our sin in Christ! Let’s live like it.

Jesus, thank you. Your death on the cross put my sin to death so that I am free to walk in the Spirit. Keep me walking in step with You so that your fruit will be evident in my life. Amen.

Yes; I believe I need constant reminding that the deeds of the flesh have been put to death, that I am not a servant of them anymore. I Thank our Lord God, our Heavenly Father, for giving us a new life, for freeing us from sin, and for giving us His Holy Word for daily strengthening, support and soo much more. Thank You!
Father help me to overcome my anger lord I need u lord amen
Amen🙏! Thank you for these words of wisdom and encouragement. Father, in the name of Jesus, I desire to walk in the Holy Spirit again today. I recognize that only as He lives the life of the Lord Jesus Christ in me, will I be able to escape the works of my flesh. It is a struggle. I pray the Holy Spirit will produce His fruit within me and fill me afresh with His presence and control me by faith as I surrender.
Love these daily devotions, you are such a blessing to me.
How do you deal with a person that is angry and mean? Please Jesus guide me!
We all struggle with our sinful nature because we have not yet glorified with new bodies. We desire at times to please God and the fruit grows. There are other times whe our desires are sinful and we grieve the Holy Spirit and need to repent. Jesus knows our heart and is teaching us how to trust him more each day. May we all strive to love and obey him more each day. When we have victory we rejoice and praise him. When we fail we humbly ask for his forgiveness and thank him for mercy and grace. Jesus be glorified in us. Amen
Lord Jesus, help me to cultivate these fruits so they grow in stature. .
Oh yes so many areas I need to work on
I'm over 50 years old now, and I still struggle with this.
