What Evidence Do You Have?

Read Galatians 5:22-25
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.”
What evidence of the Holy Spirit do you find at work in your life? What deeds of the flesh do you need to put to death?
I used to lead music for elementary students every Wednesday night. The most requested song to sing was a silly song about the fruit of the Spirit. “The fruit of the Spirit’s not a coconut, if you want to be a coconut, you might as well hear it, you can’t be the fruit of the Spirit. The fruit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control...” It was ridiculous but also so fun to see them joyfully singing and memorizing the fruit of the Spirit at the same time.
The song is true. The fruit of the Spirit is not a coconut, a banana, a cherry, or a grape. The fruit of the Spirit are godly character traits that are evident in the lives of those who belong to God and therefore possess the Holy Spirit.
Earlier in Galatians chapter 5, the apostle Paul lists the deeds of the flesh: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these” (v 19-21). If we are in Christ, these sins ought to be nailed on the cross and put to death in our lives. They are the opposite of the fruit of the Spirit.
For those of us in Christ, the old, sinful self is dead and we have been given a new life. Our sins do not need to have power over us anymore! We need to weed out the deeds of the flesh that remain so the fruit of the Spirit can grow freely in our lives. We are free from the bondage of our sin in Christ! Let’s live like it.
Jesus, thank you. Your death on the cross put my sin to death so that I am free to walk in the Spirit. Keep me walking in step with You so that your fruit will be evident in my life. Amen.
