Walk By The Spirit

November 18

Read Galatians 5:16-18

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Reflect

How have you experienced the inner conflict of your flesh and the Spirit?

Have you ever felt like you just can’t get it together? No matter how hard you try, you continue to fall back into your old ways. If that’s you, you are in good company. The apostle Paul expressed a similar struggle. In Romans 7:15 he lamented, “I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.”

It’s so frustrating to experience our flesh and the sin that is still in our hearts. While we are born again in Christ, we are still wrestling with the sinfulness of our flesh. It can be so discouraging. Before we were in Christ, our sin may not have bothered us at all. But now that we are in Christ, we feel conviction when we sin. Our sin nags at us. We are aware of it. We know we can’t just do whatever we want. And we should hate our sin because God certainly does. We just can’t overcome our sinfulness all on our own.

So what is the good news? If we are in Christ, we have the gift of the Holy Spirit. Before Jesus ascended into heaven in Acts 1:8, He said, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you…” We cannot overcome sin, and we cannot do the work that God has called us to do in our own strength. We need a Helper. We need to walk by the Spirit. We need His power!

In Romans 8:5, Paul said it this way, “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.” Those of us who are in Christ have the Holy Spirit living in us. But we have to choose to daily walk in the Spirit. When we spend time in the Word, pray, and seek Him, we will be led by Him. Our minds will be filled with His Word, and our lifestyle choices and decisions will be guided by the Spirit. We will find that our desires become more and more like His the longer we walk with Him.

Friends, submit to the Holy Spirit today. Ask Him to lead you. Fill your mind with God’s Word. Let the power of the Holy Spirit go to work in your life to help you overcome your battle with the flesh.

Pray

Holy Spirit, I want my walk to be led by You. Guide my steps, make my desires more like Yours, and change my sinful heart. Give me the power to overcome my flesh and glorify You in everything I do. Amen.

*THANKYOUJESUS*
Your Holy Spirit now lives in me; help me to grow in grace and become more like You, my Lord and my God.
Thank you for sharing, Barb. That's not easy to share. You are not alone! Praying for you both!
Amen
Lord God, I praise and thank You for your love for each one of us! You have made a way for us to have a relationship with You through Jesus Christ our Savior! Through Him we can have peace and joy as we go through life on earth. I need You, Holy Spirit to guide me in truth and in love. Help me to keep my focus on you and not allow the turmoil of this world to put fear in my heart. Lord Jesus, reign in me and help me to be a blessing to those around me. Thank You Father for what You are doing right now. In Jesus precious name, amen!
Thanks for the message. There are times I feel like Paul. The things I don't want to do, I do. The things I should do I don't do.
I have had a sinful desire in the sexual area for over 50 years. Romance novels are the problem. I am slowly weaning off of them. My husband has problems in this area more than I do. Praying he will break it with God's power, but he doesn't want it to change.
Lord I need Your Holy Spirit to lead and guide me and help me fight my struggle with my flesh and my wanting to do right and what is pleasing to You. Yes, I'm often feeling convicted and want only to do what gives You all the glory and praise. Thank You in advance Lord, in Jesus Holy name I pray, Amen.
We should help other brothers and sisters with thier walk with Jesus.
Love this.
Hey Jennifer, I do pray for you. The question of assurance of salvation is common. I’ve struggled with this. I remember on several occasions confessing my sins and giving my life over to Christ. It happened at a camp in central Nebraska. It happened at a school chapel. It happened several times at church. I was struggling to believe I was really saved. So can we be sure of our salvation? 1 John 5:11 helps answer that question. “And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.” When God says, eternal he means what he says. He could have said, “temporary” or “conditional”, but that’s not what God offers us. He offers us eternal salvation by grace. If you want to be sure, ask yourself these questions: Do I realize I truly need a savior? Do I really turn from my sin and turn to Christ? Do I truly believe in Jesus’s death, burial, and resurrection? If you answered yes, then you have your answer. God Bless!
Boy can I relate to this passage. I have a habitual sin problem called lust of the eye, flesh and the pride of life. I like ladies and I have to fight this fight alone you can not just tell your wife or friends or Pastor the battle that rages in side your mind and heart they'd run the other way from you. And yes i assume most women would do the same. It's a battle I lose more often than I win. I keep going back to God in prayer asking him to remove this sin from me but I've been battling this for better than 30 years and I've lost more than I've won. Oh well I will keep going back to Jesus in prayer every day but at night I usually find I'm back at it on my computer...Yikes!!!!!! pray for me please....
I dropped an egg on the floor this morning. Immediately had negative thoughts about how my day would go. Then I sang This is the Day That the Lord has Made and told Satan to get behind me. Satan knows how down I can get over little things. God please keep be conscious of your presence.
Amen

Lorrett - THANK you for sharing! I am praying for you to grow stronger in the Lord and to continue to rest in him!
Thank you. This is a very timely reminder of the battle I'm having. I thought I had my mind on God, but I need to strengthen my focus on Him.
yes I did thank you
It's true we can do nothing of ourselves, only what is done in Christ will last. I pray before cooking, driving, sleeping, walking, etc. I ask Jesus Christ to guide my dreams every night as enemy will try. 🙏❤Christian Grammy
Pleade The Blood of Jesus Christ on your pain and in Jesus Christ's Name command pain, etc. to get out! Then praise our Living Lord Jesus no matter what! Once I, after car accident, I did t hff at 6 days & on 6th day pain in left side & back & front left! PRAISE JESUS! Grammy
This devotional is so personal for me today. It's a struggle, I am just like Paul: "I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate". This makes me miserable, and upset at myself. This conviction reinforces that I can't do it by myself, I need God's help each day! Father, please help and strengthen me today, as I recognize that I can't do anything by myself, "but I can do all things through Christ Jesus Who strengthens me". Thank You for Your amazing love and grace. Amen!
Just what I needed today.
The Holy Spirit is "He not she'.
I love this Devotional, it really lifts my spirit. I go through so much at times. Sometimes I wonder if I'm saved. Please pray for me Pastor Crawford. God bless you.. I need to read more and pray.
Pray for me to be healed of pain
Thank you for this encouraging word .pray for me to overcome my bad habits 🙏
Thank you very much for that word.
The spirit of God, the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost, seems to be the least understood and embraced aspect of our God. Yet, He/She is the most interactive and guiding force that our Father and Christ give to us in this time. Thank you for the reminder to pray, “ Holy Spirit, I want my walk to be led by You.”
Pastor what a great devotion. The truth of the battle within is prevalent and most believers won’t admit it. We have the gift of the Holy Spirit but that doesn’t mean we are free from the temptations of sin. And if we are not reading and praying the Holy Spirit can convict us but not keep us from sinning. We have to prepare daily for battle and by God’s grace have victory today and glorify Jesus by our success because without him sin will overcome us. Thank you Jesus. Amen
This is a welcome passage for my struggles. Holy Spirit I submit to You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.🙏🏿
God I pray that you give me the strength to stand against the flesh. Thank you God and pastor Nat Amen
