Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money. Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that. (NIV)
Do you recall a season of your life when times were truly certain?
I keep hearing the phrase “In these uncertain times” lately. And I understand why. One day, we were carrying out our business-work, school, church, sports, concerts, social events, etc. But within a matter of days, it all just stopped. We looked ahead but couldn’t see what was coming next. Fear was everywhere. No end in sight.
Yes, these times are uncertain. But when has life ever been certain? Never. There has always been the potential that in an instant, our lives could turn upside down. When we get in the car we aren't guaranteed that we won’t get in an accident. There has never been a guarantee that everything will turn out fine at the doctor. We can lose what we thought was a steady job. We are not promised old age.
Uncertain times are not new. James, the brother of Jesus, wrote about this in approximately 44 AD. He says that we go around making our plans but our life is just a mist-here one moment and gone the next. We have never known how long we have here on Earth.
Friends, we think these are uncertain times because we had the illusion of control. But it was just that-an illusion. We are not and never have been in control.
So what can we be certain of? God is in control. He has numbered our days, He has counted the hair on heads, He will protect us, and He loves us. He is good. Let’s focus on those certainties.
Father, You are a good God and You have me in Your hands. You know what is coming tomorrow and I know I can trust You. I am not certain of anything but You. Amen.
