Read Psalm 121: 1-2 “I lift my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
Reflect Where do you look when trouble comes? Do you fix your gaze on your problems or on the One who is the solution?
One of my favorite hymns is “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”. The chorus says, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of His glory and grace”.
I love to picture that. Looking straight into Jesus’s face, the world around me fading away, and with it, all of the world’s problems. You see, I struggle with anxiety. And one thing I’ve noticed is that when I start to struggle, it’s because my eyes are focused on the problems and not the Solution. On my troubles and not my Helper.
If I have my eyes on the news and not Jesus, I am going to panic. If I have my gaze fixed on the stressors in my life, instead of Jesus, I am going to be overwhelmed. But if I lift up my eyes to Jesus, all of the things that give me so much anxiety, begin to fade away.
The Psalmist says that he lifts up his eyes to the hills but that his help does not come from them. His help comes from the God who made those hills and made all of heaven and earth. He is powerful, He is our Creator, He is our Helper.
In Psalm 141, David wrote, “But my eyes are fixed on you, Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge-do not give me over to death.” David wisely kept his eyes zeroed in on the LORD. He is our refuge. Our safe place.
Friend, turn your eyes from the things that are scaring you today and lift up your eyes to Jesus. When you take the time to really look at Him, you find your help, your hiding place, your refuge.
Pray Jesus, when I am anxious and scared, help me to turn my eyes to You. All of the things of Earth are temporary and will fade away. But you will always be my Helper and Sustainer. Amen.
