Transforming Power

June 16

Read Philippians 3:21 (ESV)

...who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

Reflect

Are you ever frustrated by your body’s weakness and limitations?

The human body is amazing! Whenever I study it, I am fascinated at how God created us. Our body systems are intricate and interwoven. Everything was specifically designed to perform its given task. It would be an impossible feat for a human being to create something as complex as our bodies. We were designed to be precision instruments by our perfect Creator.

And yet, in today’s verse, Paul describes our bodies as “lowly.” In other words, our bodies are humble or modest. They are common and inferior. If our bodies were cars, they would be the base model. Compared to what? Jesus’ glorious body. Next to His perfect, resurrected body, it is easy to see that we are weak and flawed. At the very least, we know that our bodies gradually wear out over time. Our bodies are subject to illness and prone to injury. We are not immortal. We have an expiration date.

We were created to be perfect and glorious beings made in His image. And yet, when sin entered the world, so did death and decay. We’ve been in the process of dying ever since.

But Paul reminds us that we don’t have to despair over our meekness or our mortality. He says that Jesus Christ is going to transform us to be like Him! We are promised resurrected bodies just like His! And they will be glorious! They will be perfected. And they will be eternal.

How? Jesus has the power. Paul points out that Jesus has the power to create us and miraculously transform us. In 1 Corinthians 15:49, Paul said, “Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.” We will be like Him!

He goes on to say, “Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality” (1 Corinthians 15:51-53).

Friends, what hope we have in Christ’s transforming power! Those who have died in Christ are with Him right now in Spirit. But one day, they will be raised from the dead and transformed into His glorious likeness. If we are still alive when He returns, we will be changed into His image in the “twinkling of an eye.” So don’t despair over disease, disability, deterioration, or death. He has power over all things. And He’s promised a glorious transformation.

Pray

Jesus, thank You for the promise that one day, we will be transformed to be like You. Until then, help me to steward the body that You have given me well so that I can serve and glorify You. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I thank You for redeeming me by the blood of Your Son Jesus. As you raised Him up from the grave, so Father, raise me up by the power that will transform me from a dead to an ever-living, incorruptible person. I look forward to be transformed into the image of Your loving Son, Jesus. Amen.

Pastor Nat, please pray for my husband who has been admitted to the hospital yesterday. Doctors are still trying to pinpoint what's causing his illness. Please give them the wisdom. Thank you.
