Toward the Light!
Read John 3:20-21 (ESV)
“For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
How do you typically respond to the light God sheds on your life? Do you let it lead you towards God or away from Him?
I remember stumbling around my kids’ rooms at bedtime when they were little. It was pitch black but I’d see the light on in the hall through the crack at the bottom of the door. So, I’d head toward that light, carefully picking my way across their bedroom floor. I couldn’t just flick on the light because that’d wake up the boys. But it sure would have been nice if someone could have at least shone a flashlight on my feet so that I could get out of that darkness unscathed.
You see, the dark concealed many hazards. At any given night, I could have stepped on a Lego, stubbed my toe on the corner of the bed, tripped over a book, rolled my ankle on a football…you get the idea. I was always so relieved to be in the light once I got to the hall because then I could walk freely once again. Why anyone would ever choose to walk around in the dark is beyond me.
But in today’s passage, Jesus said that some people do choose to walk around in the dark, spiritually speaking. Why? Because they do wicked things. Just as the darkness conceals dangers in our path, it also provides plenty of cover for people to hide evil deeds. They love their sin so they don’t want the light to expose them.
Jesus was talking with Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader. Jesus had already baffled Nicodemus by telling him that his religious rituals, good deeds, and “clean” living couldn’t save him, he had to be spiritually reborn. Jesus had told him that God sent Him to save the world. Jesus is the light that shines in this dark world and everyone who comes to Him will be saved.
Unfortunately, not everyone loves the Light, in fact, they often resent Him. Jesus’ righteousness and holiness shines a spotlight on our wickedness. Some of us want to leave the evil darkness behind so we move toward the Light. We repent of our sins and pursue Jesus at all costs. We feel a sense of relief and freedom walking in His light. We hate our sin and want to walk in truth and righteousness. We want to live lives that please the Lord.
But other people want to continue to hide in the dark so they can continue fulfilling their evil desires. They love their sin so they hate the light and choose to live in the dark. They avoid Jesus’ light at all costs lest it spotlight their sin.
When Jesus’ holy and righteous spotlight shines in your life, how do you respond? I encourage you, don’t retreat back to the darkness! Instead, head toward His Light.
Lord, I thank and praise You for shining Your light in this dark world and in my life. Expose the sin in my heart and keep drawing me to You. I always want to walk towards Your light and never away from it. Amen.
