There Are Guarantees in Life
Read Ephesians 1:12-14
...so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of His glory. In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of salvation, and believed in Him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of His glory.
According to this passage, why can we rest assured of our salvation?
A friend of mine once told me that when she was younger, she struggled with having confidence that she was truly saved. She had accepted Christ when she was about 7 or 8 years old, and she spent the next few years, fearful that she hadn’t done something right when she accepted Jesus. How was she supposed to know if she was really saved or not? She struggled to fall asleep at night because she was afraid she was going to die and find out that she wasn’t really saved at all.
This story makes me sad, but I am sure she is not alone in this experience. How can we know for sure that we are in Christ? Paul makes it very clear that when we hear the word of truth, which is the gospel of salvation, and respond to it with faith, then we are sealed with the promise of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the “guarantee of our inheritance.”
When a man promises to marry a woman, he offers an engagement ring as a symbol or token to demonstrate his intentions to wed her. In business and banking, earnest money, down payments, deposits, and collateral are given upfront to demonstrate a person’s intentions to pay back their loan.
You may have heard that in life there are no guarantees. But this is not true for followers of Christ. If we have accepted Christ, we are guaranteed to inherit as a child of God. God has given us the Holy Spirit to demonstrate His intentions towards us. The Holy Spirit is the proof of His promises.
We don't have our full inheritance yet. We are not yet living in eternal glory with God. But while we wait for the culmination of God’s great plan, and we wait for Jesus to return, we can be at peace. We have been sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. So rest in that blessed assurance today, friend.
Father, thank You. Not only for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ but also for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Thank You for the evidence of the Holy Spirit working in my life so that I can fully trust that You will keep Your promises to me. All for Your glory alone. Amen.
