The Secret of Being Content

Read Philippians 4:11-13

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.



Are you feeling content right now? Why or why not?


I must admit that I am a work in progress when it comes to contentment. During quarantine, I have discovered just how much it takes for me to be content. Even though my family was healthy, we had a home, we had more than enough food and clothing, I was not content. I found things to grumble about. “We can’t go anywhere! We can’t do anything! We are just stuck inside this house!” I probably sounded a lot like my children who claim they are bored all day when they are surrounded by their toys.


I can learn a lot from Paul in his letter to the Philippians. He wrote this while he was in a Roman prison in approximately A.D. 61. He had a right to feel bored and trapped. And yet, instead of spending his time grumbling and complaining, he spent his time writing letters to encourage those he ministered to. Those letters were not only read by their intended recipients, they were read and circulated throughout the early church. Amazingly, they are still being read by the church today! I am sitting here in 2020 being encouraged as I read a copy of one of his letters!


So what is the secret to being content? The understanding that we can do all things because Christ gives us strength. I can learn to be content in any circumstance because Jesus sustains us. I can endure any hardship because Christ empowers me.


These are hard times. I know that many people are struggling. But take heart! We know the secret to being content. You and I can do all this through Him who gives us strength!



Jesus, thank you for giving me strength. Help me learn to be content and satisfied with my circumstances because I know that You will sustain me. In You, I have everything I need. Amen.

Esther I have recently renewed my commitment to God through Jesus Christ and am again experiencing the peace and joy possible only through Him. Satan is angry and torments me continually but I know who I serve and throw myself on God's mercy and grace, knowing they are sufficient to my need. Glory, glory, to my God and Savior!
Being content is rather easy for me because of how far God has already brought me! Than you so very much!
God will sustain us with his Holy Spirit every single day when we are obedient, and love each other. Thank you Lord for all your blessings Amen.
Being content comes about what Jesus has finished for me regardless of circumstances , amen , there things I can't do but one thing remains , salvation guarantee no matter what , sin taken away forever and eternal life sealed for us in heaven...amen

God, please, let me learn to remember my blessings more. Please, help me to let go of my self-pity. I thank God everday. I am content m, bean a widow for 20 years, God has taken very good care of me above combinimg a full-time job and a being a carer for my daughter with chronic leg pain. I really thank God where would I be without this assurance of his presence. Praise God am really content and it can only be God.
I'm a believer, but I have to say I am struggling. Although it isn't the fact I'm out of work because of COVID19. I now have time,, time to sew, knit, crochet and garden. I'm used to getting up at 3:45am to go drive a bus for developmentally disabled.. Home again at 6pm.. I was beginning to burn out so I'm happy to be off. All the things I listed above I love to do but have fallen into some kind of slump, and find myself not doing them. I pray but I know I am weak.. I just had Carpel Tunnel surgery and recovering well. So I don't know what I'm up to. So on that note I could use some prayers Thank you for this devotional.
As a Christ follower, we should be content with what the Lord has provide, I say that I can do all things through him who strngthens me.

Your commentary is true there's a worldwide hard time because of that the confusion and stress hurt people. I want to recognise that our God strengthen me, he sustains my life and give me hope and faith through his Word.

I've been struck down with several disabling diseases through this year, we recently lost our oldest son however, I'm content and my faith has never been stronger.. thank you Jesus and for all my supportive Christians...the power of God is overwhelming Craig Chamberlain

I have found that the point of contentment is on the apex of a parabola. On one side there is anxiety or thinking that there are unmet needs. On the other is complacency. I tend to look at these verses together with Philippians 4:13, John 15:5, and Matthew 6:25-34. It all starts and ends with Jesus Christ. May God richly bless everyone reading/writing these devotionals and may we readily recognize His blessings to praise His name.

What does it mean to be content? Not desiring more seems to define contentment. How does Jesus make you content? How can you be full of Jesus and not want more? More of Jesus is good, but Jesus plus everything else is when troubles occur. If your heart is renewed daily by his gracious love then if you have plenty or in need it is enough and your desire is for more of Jesus not anything else. Conclusion you are content! Thank you Jesus for your love is all satisfying. Amen
