The Lamb Once and For All

December 24

Read Luke 2:10-12

But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

Reflect

Why is it significant that the angels said Jesus's birth was good news to all people?

For hundreds of years, the Jews had been waiting for a Messiah. They knew that the penalty for sin was death, so the Jews relied on a sacrificial system. In this way, animals paid the debt of their sins for them and died in their place. In order for it to be an acceptable sacrifice, the animal had to be perfect and without blemish. For example, a spotless lamb was an acceptable sacrifice.

But it was only temporarily acceptable. A perfect lamb could pay the price for your sins once, but the next time you sinned, you'd have to sacrifice another and then another. So much blood was shed forgiving the sins of mankind! The Jews knew they needed a Messiah-a spotless lamb who would give the ultimate sacrifice. One that would pay for all of the sins of the world once and for all.

And so, in a field one dark night, an angel appeared to shepherds. The keepers of the lambs were the first to hear that Jesus, the Spotless Lamb, had been born. This angel told the shepherds that they would find their Savior wrapped up in cloths and lying in a manger. It seems so inappropriate to us that our King would sleep among animals in a feeding trough. But when you think about Jesus being the "Lamb of God," where else should He be?

All signs were pointing to the fact that this was the Lamb they had been waiting for! The Lamb of God that would take away the sins of the world (John 1:29). Once and for all. No more sacrificial lambs would be necessary. Jesus was the Savior. The Christ.

But this Good News was not just for the Jews. Notice the angel's words: "I bring you good news of great joy that will be for ALL the people." He did not come just for the Jews but also for the Gentiles. He came for ALL people. To take away the sins of the entire world.

Have you embraced this Good News, friend? Have you accepted Jesus, the Lamb of God that was born to die on the cross for your sins? If you haven't, why not today? This Christmas Eve, you can accept the best gift you've ever been offered. Your sins can be forgiven. Your debt can be paid. Once and for all by the Lamb of God.

Pray

Jesus, You are the Spotless Lamb. Thank You for taking away my sins! Because of your sacrifice on my behalf, I can receive the forgiveness of my sins and life everlasting in Your presence. I accept this amazing gift, Lord. Amen.

Thank you for your questions. I'll try to answer them susynctly. Did he also die to instill us with the holy spirit? Jesus said that when he returned to the Father, He would send us the Holy Spirit as our helper. The Spirit lives within us as a seal of our salvation and future with Christ. We receive power and spiritual gifts upon our salvation. To instill us with power and that we are now gods? There are some cults that promote this, but nowhere does the Bible teach us that through our salvation we become gods. We are simply souls saved by the blood of Jesus with great power and responsibility. Do we still only wait for a miracle working God to save us over and over? What does the book of Acts suggest? I'm a bit confused by this question. I'll answer it as I understand it. God saves us once and for all. Some people never receive Christ as savior, so they constantly battle the flesh and their salvation. Jesus said there will be many who will cry out to Jesus on the day of judgment, but He will say to them, "I never knew you." So salvation is permanent, but also isn't as simple as raising your hand or saying "yes." Regarding miracles as seen in the book of Acts, sign gifts appear to be dormant after the apostles. Does God still do miracles? Yes. Does God answer the prayers for supernatural healing? Yes. But do I see solid evidence for the continuation of sign gifts today? No. I hope this helps.
Thank you Jesus for your wonderful gift of salvation, you are my friend.
