That You May Know
Read Ephesians 1:15-18
For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which He has called you, what are the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints...
Suppose a friend of yours recently accepted Christ as their Savior and asked you, “What now? What comes next?” How would you respond?
Recently, one of my sons accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. Obviously, I was overjoyed and excited for him. But I knew that moment was not the end of his journey of faith but only the beginning. Accepting Christ and punching a ticket for heaven is not the only goal. My son has the rest of his life ahead of him. What now? What is the next step in His walk with the Lord?
Sadly, many Christians live as if forgiveness of sins and the free gift of salvation is all there is. Once they have accepted Christ, they are happy with what they have, and they just coast to the end.
But that is not all Paul wanted for the believers in Ephesus. When he heard of their faith in Jesus and their love toward each other, he was thankful and blessed to hear of it! But then, he prayed that the Holy Spirit would enlighten them. He prayed that the Holy Spirit would open the eyes of their hearts and shed light on the hope that they have in Jesus. He wanted them to understand how rich and full this hope is. He wanted the Holy Spirit to show them just how much God has given them!
Paul thanked God when he heard of their initial faith in Jesus. But then he prayed for their spiritual growth. He prayed for the power of the Holy Spirit to be at work in their lives. The Holy Spirit is the agent that reveals the truth of God’s Word to us. The Holy Spirit is the giver of wisdom. The Holy Spirit ensures that we are able to understand the Word of God but also enables us to live it out. The Holy Spirit is the agent of change in our hearts and minds-causing us to grow in the knowledge of God and have a deeper understanding of what God is calling us to do.
Friends, I am overjoyed to hear of your faith in Jesus Christ. But know that all of us at Back to the Bible are praying for the Holy Spirit to be active in the lives of all the believers who take part in our ministry. We are praying that the Holy Spirit enlightens you and enables you as you seek to grow spiritually.
Father, I don’t want to just coast to the end. I want to know you more and more. I want to grow in my understanding of the hope you have called me to. I want the Holy Spirit to enlighten me and illuminate the eyes of my heart. Amen.
