Stay Salty - Your Daily Forward Devotional

Stay Salty

September 7

Read Matthew 5:13

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.”

What is salt useful for? How are Christians similar to salt?

Salt has historically been called “white gold” because it was very valuable in ancient cultures. Not only was it used to season and flavor food, but it was necessary to preserve foods. It was so valuable that some cultures, like the Roman army, used to pay wages or trade in salt.

Our access to refrigeration has somewhat reduced our dependence on salt, though it is still the most widely used preservative. However, salt is still just as tasty as ever. When I watch a cooking show, a common critique is that the dish needs more salt. Salt enhances the flavor of a dish. Without enough salt, food is bland.

So why does Jesus compare Christians to salt? Because we are supposed to enhance the world. Our presence in society, or our lack thereof, should be noticeable. Just as a dish is bland without enough salt, so are our communities when Christians are not salty. When we act just like everyone else. The teachings of Jesus are not the same as the teachings of the world. If we are being biblically salty, the people around us will take note. They should notice that there is something different about us that is savory and appealing. Our saltiness brings opportunities to share the hope that we have in Jesus Christ.

But if we lose our salty flavor and go bland, blending into the world around us, we lose our ability to positively impact those around us for Christ. Is your life noticeably different because of your relationship with Jesus? We have been called to be the salt of the earth. Stay salty, friends.

Jesus, I know that my life should be different from the rest of the world. Help me to positively impact those around me and use me to draw others to You. Amen.

God, because I have chosen to be blessed by forgiveness of sin through Christ, I now have an obligation to live my life free of sin. (John 8: 1-11) Please, help me to maintain my saltiness. (Matthew 5:13) Please, help me to stay on the right path by following and obeying Christ's teachings. Please, help me to preserve Your Word through study, practice, and obedience to Your Word, and through sharing Your Word with others. For Your's is the Kingdom, the glory, the honor, the heavens, and everything within the earth including mankind. In Your Name, God, I pray. Amen.
