Serving Like Him

September 29

Read John 13:14-17

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly, I tell you, no servant is greater than his Master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Reflect

What did Jesus demonstrate by washing His disciples' feet?

I got tired of doing all the things the other day. I was tired of doing things for my kids that they could do themselves. My spouse had a busy week at work, and I had to pick up a lot of slack. I felt like I was doing more than my fair share at home. And I started grumbling about it. I am not a servant, after all. Or am I?

I felt convicted in my Bible studies as I read the greetings of several letters in the New Testament. Several of Paul's letters begin this way: "Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus." Peter, James, and Jude also refer to themselves in this way. Not to mention Old Testament saints who were often referred to as servants of God; Abraham, Moses, Joshua, David, etc.

Being a servant is not something we find appealing. And yet, that is what we are called to be--servants of God. If we are servants of God, He is our Master. We obey Him and follow Him. We live to serve Him and do His will.

Jesus set this example of service for us by washing His disciples' feet. He is not asking us to do anything that He was not willing to do. In that day and location, people wore sandals and walked disgusting, dirt roads in the heat. When you entered someone's home, you were often met with a servant who would wash your feet. You can imagine that this was not a desirable job, so it was left to the lowest servants. And yet, Jesus humbly washed His disciples' feet, and He commanded that we do the same for each other.

How do I show others that I am a servant of the King? I serve them. And it starts in my home. In my workplace. In my neighborhood and community. I get to serve them with gratitude. That's the kind of servant God calls us to be.

Pray

Jesus, thank You for Your example of service. I want to be Your servant. I want to love others as You do. Help me to serve like You. Amen.

God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. When our faith is tested, we have a chance to grow. Let it grow. Hearing God's Word and doing good works go together. Help me to serve like You. Thanks, for your example
