Servants and Saints - Your Daily Forward Devotional

Servants and Saints

May 3

Read Philippians 1:1-5 (ESV)

Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.

Reflect

What does it mean to be a “servant of Christ Jesus”? What does it mean to be a “saint in Christ Jesus”?

If someone asked you to be their servant would you consider that an honor? Probably not. And if someone asked you to be their slave, it is even more likely that you would reject the offer. After all, a slave is viewed as a piece of property without their own individual rights. Who would willingly choose to be a slave?

Paul did. He identified both himself and Timothy as servants (or more accurately translated, slaves) of Jesus Christ. Paul had chosen to lay down his life for the advancement of the Gospel. He submitted himself completely to Christ and made Jesus his Lord.

But this is what we are all commanded to do! If we want to be saved, we need to be His slaves. We have to reject the idea that we are in charge of our own lives and submit to the authority of Jesus Christ. Romans 10:9 says that “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Calling someone your Lord means calling them your master. It means that you acknowledge that they have authority over you.

It may not seem very honorable or wise to forfeit control of your life and make Jesus your Lord. But Jesus offers us this reassurance: “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 10:39). Jesus promises eternal rewards to those who set aside this temporary life and dedicate themselves to His service.

Now, what if someone called you a “saint”? Would you consider that a title that you are worthy of accepting? Probably not. After all, aren’t saints super-holy spiritual people? (And usually dead ones at that?) And yet, that is what Paul calls anyone who has trusted Christ as Savior. “Saint” means “one who is set apart or sanctified.” As believers in Jesus Christ, that is what we are! We are set apart for Christ.

We didn’t do anything to deserve this honorable designation. Paul says “grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” It is only by the grace of God that we have been saved and it is only because of that salvation that we can be at peace with God.

It’s important to note that we are all slaves to something whether we want to be or not. We are either slaves to Christ or slaves to sin and death. But in Christ, “you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God” (Galatians 4:7).

Friends, what an honor it is to be a slave to Christ! By submitting your life to Him, you are made free. You are a saint and an heir. You are a child of the King!

Pray

Lord Jesus, I submit my life to You and Your service. You are my Master. Thank You for the promise of eternal glory. I don’t deserve it, but it is an honor to belong to You. Amen.

Carlos, you're not alone. No one likes rejection or persecution. They are painful realities of following Christ. Think about how passionate Peter was and yet he denied Christ 3 times in a row - even when asked by everyday people. So it's everyone's struggle. I pray for us all that we will be bold and not fear.
Lord Your Word tells us that in order for us to be great, we must serve. Make me one of Your hired servants for I can have no better Master than You.
I am praying with you for peace and strength during this difficult time at work.
How i want to be a slave for Christ, yet my flesh is weak and I fear people. I'm afraid to suffer for Jesus, though my heart and spirit want to follow Him and be His servant for His glory. I am being as open and truthful about this dichotomy in me. Oh where is my faith ?
Yes I got a lot out of this, I want to be a slave to Christ

Thank you Lord, I am no longer a slave to sin, but a saint and an heir. Thank You for the promise of eternal glory. I don't deserve it, but it is an honor to belong to You. " Praise God."
Lord, I am Your slave and servant. I give You my life because it is Yours. I am not worthy of the title of Saint. I thank You, Lord, for Your saving grace. I love You Lord. In Christ Jesus name I pray, Amen.

c.f. I Cor. 11:1 and others.
Amen and Amen. Thank you Lord.
While Jesus was on earth, He commanded several to "follow me" but now that He has returned to heaven, the admonition of St. Paul to "follow me as I follow Christ" temporarily replaces that command. Yet Paul's command does not contradict that of the Lord Jesus, just limits it. We are unlikely to perform healings or walk on water. A recent survey indicated that most Americans have not consciously formed a coherent worldview - merely sought to maximize their comfort level. Taking Paul's advice to recognize Jesus as lord in all of life would fix that dysfunctional life style. I'm not fully there yet.
Yes we are slaves and saints in Jesus. The paradox is amazing true. To live most joyfully we have to die daily take up our cross and follow Jesus. Jesus came as a servant and yet he is God. If we want to be great we must be servant to all. Jesus help us to be like you and be who you want us to be. Amen
Glory be to God. Truth...Amen, by the grace and help of God through Christ.
Thank God for giving us another beautiful day and thank you pastor Nat for the devotional Amen
Jesus we 💕💕💕 you 💞💞💞
Jesus I'm your slave!!!
Jesus please help us 🙏🙏🙏
"we are all slaves to something whether we want to be or not." Absolutely and without a doubt. Thank God he has kept me alive long enough to realize I can choose to be a slave to either sin or Jesus Christ. I choose the latter.
I recently had a job that was mentally and physically absorbing me. I was so absorbed it was taking me from Gods word. I became one of those Christians who only looked at her Bible when in church. The job was starting to make me miss more and more services. Well God has pulled me from that job. I made an honest mistake but it cost me that job. At first I was so hurt that it happened the way it did but now I see that God allowed it to happen for my good. I am now letting myself be absorbed in the word. I’m sharing verses and my beliefs with others on FB. God will use us if we let him. I will pray for Gods will in your situation. That things get better for you ♥️
Thank you, Lord. Amen.
