Ripe for the Picking - Your Daily Forward Devotional

Ripe for the Picking

December 21

Read Matthew 9:37-38

Then He said to His disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field."

What happens to crops that are ripe for the harvest, but there are not enough workers to do the work? How does this apply to evangelism?

We used to have a huge garden. We enjoyed having fresh produce ripe for the picking in our own backyard. But here's the thing about ripe produce. You have to pick it during a certain window of time, or it rots. On more than one occasion, my family would be too busy to get outside and pick it. It was frustrating to find that in a matter of days, we'd missed our opportunity and the food went to waste.

In today's verse, Jesus compares His church to a garden or a field. He said that it is ripe for the picking, but there are not enough harvesters. It is not just frustrating if these crops rot in the field. It is devastating. We aren't talking about rotten zucchinis or putrid potatoes. We are talking about human souls.

Jesus said that there are plenty of people out there who are ripe or ready to hear about the Gospel. But there are few people willing to share it with them. This should not be.

Jesus said that we should ask the Lord to send out workers into His field. We know that God is in control of the harvest of souls. Jesus says that He is the "Lord of the harvest." Ultimately, it is He who brings in the harvest, not us.

And yet, He doesn't just invite us to participate. He commands it. In the Great Commission (Mathew 28:19-20), Jesus says to go and make disciples.

Friends, we are commanded to participate in bringing this crop in. We are to pray for workers to be sent out, and we are being sent out to bring it in ourselves. Jesus says the fields are ripe for the picking, and He promises a bountiful harvest. People are ready to hear the Gospel. Are you ready to share it?

God, I know that You are the Lord of the harvest. You will bring Your people in with or without me. And yet, You have sent me out to work. Give me the words to share Your Gospel and make disciples. Amen.
