Replacing Worry for Wonder
Published 3/30/20Read Hebrews 1:1-4"Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs."Reflect
How does it make you feel, knowing that Jesus is "heir of all things" and "the radiance of the glory of God"? How can we regain the wonder of God?
The vision of God's greatness can empower you to not worry or panic even though you may face overwhelming loss, pain, and danger. It can sustain and strengthen you, knowing that God will be your stability in an unstable world. He is our unchangeable certainty when everything around us is changing. And there's no more secure, safe place than in the center of His will and purpose for our lives.
Having our eyes on the Lord in this way is vital--David experienced it and described it throughout the Psalms. No matter how bad he was hurting or what he was fearing, he turned his focus to God and proclaimed who He was. Though he was surrounded by a host of enemies time after time, he could say, "The Lord is my light and my salvation--whom shall I fear? The Lordis the stronghold of my life--of whom shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 27:1 niv). Paul, too, said we must fix our eyes on Jesus and press on to know Him (Philippians 3). Even John, the great disciple, needed to have his eyes on the Lord (Revelation 1).
When we look to God and focus on Him instead of our problems and worries, we gain His perspective and our distress begins to subside. It doesn't mean we won't go through difficult times or experience pain. But we begin to know and believe that we can trust Him in the midst of our circumstances, for He is trustworthy.PrayLord, help me to focus on Your authority, Your goodness, Your radiance. I worship and praise You, Jesus. Amen.
