Reflect on God’s Word

June 3, 2020

Read Romans 12:2

“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (NIV)

Reflect

How is our mind renewed?

We actively reflect, think, meditate, and ponder the words of the Bible into our hearts and souls. Not only is reflection (or meditation) an active consideration of biblical truth, as Romans 12:2 tells us, it is also commanded by God.

Reflection fosters understanding, and understanding enables us to hear God’s personal message to each one of us. Let me demonstrate what I mean with an example. Take a close look at Christ’s words in Luke 6:46-49:

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

Got it? Now go back and read it a couple more times, meditating on what Jesus is saying here. Pull it apart sentence by sentence and listen to His voice, His heart. Allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you.

Ponder His words on an intellectual level: What is He saying through these verses? What’s a key message here? Is there a warning or a promise? Is He teaching me about God’s character or my eternal destiny?

Ponder His words on a relational level: How do they apply uniquely to me? Is He calling me to action? Is He telling me to slow down and listen more? Is He encouraging me—disciplining me? Have I been neglecting Him or others?

Pray

Lord, I want to stop merely reading the Bible and begin engaging it. I want to receive, reflect on, and respond to Your Word. Amen.

DEAR ABBA FATHER;JESUS PLEASE HELP ME NOT TO SHAKEN ONLY YOU KNOW WHATS AHEAD OF ME ;HELP ME MEDITATE ON YOUR WORDS WATER MY LIFE ON YOUR WILL ;THANKYOUJESUS!@1
Thank You!
Thank you! That's the desire of my heart. I want to be deeply grounded in God and His Word. I am listening and meditating... Lord, help me to apply Your Words to my life.
Simply read, meditate & apply
I particularly noticed that in comparing the two persons in the passage that both hear the Word of Christ. The difference is one practices it and stands while the other doesn't and is subject to collapse. Practising faith is a key to conquering fear and staying strong (cf John 15)
How do I engage in God's word, What does that look like.? :)
These devotions about studying and meditating on the Bible have been wonderful. This is the teaching all who desire to live godly lives that please the Lord need to hear and apply. Thank you.
Thank you, very timely word since I'm working on making the Word of God more practical in my own life.
