Ransom Paid, Fully Redeemed - Your Daily Forward Devotional

Ransom Paid, Fully Redeemed

March 18

Read 1 Peter 1:18-19 (ESV)

Knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver and gold, but with the precious blood Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

What does it mean to be redeemed?

I watched a show the other day in which a husband and his wife were out sailing in the open ocean when they were kidnapped by pirates and held hostage. The show detailed the struggle that their families had in trying to “buy them back” from the pirates. The pirates required an exorbitant amount of money that the family just didn’t have.

The truth is, if we haven’t been redeemed by Jesus Christ, we are being held hostage. If we are not in Christ, we are being held hostage to sin and death. A price has to be paid to return us to God. But as Peter says, your ransom cannot be paid with money. Riches like silver and gold do not cover your sins. But blood does. Death is the price that has to be paid.

The good news is that we do not have to pay the price ourselves. And we couldn’t even if we tried! A perfect sacrifice was required and we are certainly not perfect. We had nothing to offer our captors that would buy our freedom. But Jesus lived a perfect life. He was a spotless lamb. Without blemish. By dying on the cross for our sins, Jesus paid our ransom with His precious blood. He was completely innocent and yet an exchange was made. He willingly laid down His life in our place.

But some Christians do not live as if we have been redeemed. We seem satisfied living empty, futile lives that are not differentiated from the rest of the world in any meaningful ways. Just before Peter explained redemption in today’s passage, he exhorted Christians to be holy. In 1 Peter 1:14-16, he said, “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’”

His point is Jesus paid the ultimate price for your sins. He died a torturous death in your place. On your behalf. He bought our freedom with His blood. Therefore, out of deep respect and reverence for His sacrifice, we should walk in His freedom and seek to live lives that honor and glorify Him. Paul also expresses this truth in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. He says, “You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

Friends, we have been ransomed from slavery to sin and death and we have been purchased by Jesus Christ. We belong to Him. He sacrificed greatly on our behalf! We should live the rest of our lives seeking to honor Him.

Jesus, thank You isn’t enough for the sacrifice You made for me. Your blood paid the price that I owed and redeemed me from slavery to sin and death. I can never repay You, but I want to live my life in a way that glorifies and honors You. Amen.

19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

what an absolutely beautiful story. Jesus, my Redeemer; and my Friend. No, we really don't have words to convey our thanks. We were bought with a Price. Help me to live my life to honour and glorify you, Jesus!
