No Sin Too Great

August 4, 2020

Read 1 Timothy 1: 15-16

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in Him and receive eternal life.

Reflect

Have you ever felt like your sins are too great to be forgiven? Are your sins too many or too horrible to be used by God?

When I think about the Apostle Paul, I tend to think about his boldness in proclaiming the Gospel. I think about his incredible influence in the early church through his letters. Those letters are still impacting readers and guiding the Church today! I think about his obedience to God, his missionary journeys, and his eventual martyrdom.

And yet, Paul refers to himself as “the worst of sinners.” Before Paul encountered Jesus, he was a Pharisee. He knew the Scriptures, and he was passionate about Judaism. So passionate, in fact, that he was involved in persecuting anyone who claimed to be a Christian. He hunted Christians down, threw them in prison, and approved of their killing. The man we credit with having the greatest impact on the spread of the early Christian church was once approving of the murder of Christians?

If you have ever felt like your sins are too great to be forgiven or that you are too far gone to ever be used by God, think again.

Paul said, “I thank Christ Jesus, our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service. Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.” (1 Timothy 1: 12-13)

Paul was guilty of great sins against the early church. And yet, God had a plan for his life. A plan so incredible that when Paul encountered Jesus, he became a new creation, and his life was completely turned around. Instead of persecuting the Christians, he was preaching to Christians. Instead of arresting members of the early church, he was building the early church.

Can I encourage you today? Your sins may be many, and they may be great. But Jesus came to save sinners, and you are no exception. He can still change you, and He can still use you.

Pray

Thank you, Christ Jesus, my Lord, for forgiving my sins and allowing me to serve you despite my sins. Amen.
