Keep His Commands - Your Daily Forward Devotional

Keep His Commands

April 1

Read John 14:15 (ESV)

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”

Why should the Bible be a voice of authority in our lives?

One of the reasons there is such a large gap between the Christian worldview and the secular worldview today is that we view authority in dramatically different ways. While Christians consider God and the Bible to be their authority, many in the secular world consider themselves their own authority. They don’t really believe that anyone else has the power to tell them what they can or cannot do.

But this isn’t a new problem. In the Bible, we see a repetitive pattern of the Israelites rejecting God’s authority. “Everyone did what was right in his own eyes” (Judges 21:25). Of course, we saw how that played out for the Israelites. They were repeatedly disciplined by God and eventually, they were carried off into captivity because they refused to submit to God’s commands! The lesson here is that there are serious consequences for disobeying God’s Word.

This week, we’ve already established that the Bible is God’s Word, that it is infallible and inerrant, and that it is trustworthy and true. Given all of that, we would do well to obey the teachings of the Bible. There’s no reason not to! But if all of that isn’t enough reason to submit to Scripture, then as Christians we should obey Scripture for two reasons. One, because Jesus said so. Two, because Jesus did so.

In today’s verse, we see Jesus telling His disciples to obey Him. Another example is in Matthew 28:19-20 where we see Jesus charging His disciples to make disciples “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Jesus clearly told us to obey Scripture.

The best thing about Jesus? He didn’t just tell us to obey the Scriptures, but He obeyed them Himself. In Philippians 2:8, Paul says that Jesus “humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” When we study Jesus’ ministry, we see that He carefully obeyed God's Word. He was perfectly obedient, even obeying the will of God to die for us.

Friend, if we love Jesus, we will obey His commands. If we consider ourselves to be Christians, we will follow the Word and example of Christ.

Jesus, thank You for being the perfect example of obedience. I am not perfect like You, but I want to be obedient. Give me the courage and strength to obey Your commands even when it’s hard. Amen.

Wow great lessons in today's word thank you
Pastor Nat, you said it right. We need Jesus strength to love and obey him and his word. When we see who Jesus really is, God and that he really does love me, my desire to love and obey him comes so easily. But if my eyes and heart are closed my desires and obedience diminishes and I prone to wander. Oh how I need you Jesus to keep my eyes and heart on you and your word. Help me Lord to love and obey you today. Amen
Jesus, Please keep us one nation under God. Also, please Pray for my misguided Grandson.
