Just the Cross
Read Galatians 6:14-15
May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, what counts is the new creation.
What do people think makes them superior in today’s culture.
Some people boast about their money—some in their family name. Many take great pride in their accomplishments, careers, or their good deeds. In Paul’s day, Judaizers were boasting in their circumcision. To a Jewish man, circumcision is what marked him as one of God’s chosen people. It meant that he was set apart, separate from the rest of the world. And yet, the circumcision did not have any power to save. One could be outwardly marked as a Jew and yet, inwardly, be far from God.
Paul knew that the cross of Jesus Christ was the only thing that had the power to save. Why? The cross of Jesus Christ resulted in a new creation. No longer are the Jews the only people of God. In Jesus, we are all new creatures (2 Corinthians 5:17) who make up the church of Christ.
Being circumcised doesn’t count for anything. What counts is being a new creation through the power of the cross of Christ. In Adam, we all sin. But Jesus paid for our sins on the cross. His resurrection proves His victory over Satan and death. If we believe in Jesus’s death and resurrection on our account, we are born again and made new.
But we have no reason to boast. We did nothing to earn or deserve it. There is nothing we can do to improve our salvation, and there is nothing we can do to lose it. The only thing we can boast about is the fact that Jesus Christ died on the cross on our behalf and rose again victorious.
Friends, all of the things we think will mark us as important or worthy are inconsequential. God is not concerned with our accomplishments. Our outward works are meaningless if we are not in Jesus Christ. May we never brag or boast in the trivial things of this world but have a correct understanding of who we are without Jesus. Paul knew that without Jesus, he may have been super religious and well educated, a citizen of the most powerful government in the world, and a circumcised member of the Jewish nation. But he knew none of that mattered. It’s just the cross of Christ that counts.
Jesus, sometimes I become wrapped up in the trappings of the world and forget that without You, I am nothing. I praise You for Your sacrifice on my behalf. May I only boast in You. Amen.
