Is It Possible To Be Denied Forgiveness?

August 6, 2020

Read Hebrews 6: 4-6

For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance...

Reflect

Have you ever worried that you have committed a sin that is unforgivable?

I was recently asked if it is possible to be denied forgiveness. It is difficult to answer this question comprehensively and yet succinctly. The Bible has much to say, and there are different interpretations in the discussion. But the short answer is yes, it is possible to not be forgiven. If you persevere in a hard-hearted rejection of the person and work of Jesus Christ, you will be cut off from the forgiveness of God.

In Hebrews 6, the author warns that it is impossible for those who have once seemed like they were Christians and then turned away from the faith to be restored to repentance. As Don Carson of the Gospel Coalition puts it: “It is possible to come so close...to be taken as a Christian...and yet self-consciously look the grace of God in the face, see it for what it really is and turn away. And that is simply unforgivable.”

These individuals are not uninformed. They are not ignorant. They have been “enlightened.” They have “tasted the heavenly gift” and know what the grace of God is. They know what the Word of God says, and yet, they turn away from it. These individuals are not forgiven because they do not want to be forgiven. They have made a willful decision to turn away from Jesus.

I want to reassure you of this. If you are seeking the forgiveness of God that is found through His Son Jesus Christ, you will be forgiven. 1 John 1:9 gives us this incredible hope: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

He is faithful to forgive. If you have confessed and repented of your sins, if you have turned to Jesus and accepted His offer of salvation, you have no need to fear.

Pray

Jesus, You are abounding in steadfast love and faithful to forgive all who call upon Your name. Thank you for this assurance. Amen.

Sometimes I think, by virtue of my circumstances, that my sins were so great and so many, "What's the use?" Other times, by virtue of my behavior, as well as my attitude, I think, "Did JESUS truly come into my heart?" I'd like to repent of my sins, but I don't know how. Would someone help me with this?
Thank you BTTB for clarifying this portion of Scripture which serves as a warning to me.
This subject of blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is a hard subject to really understand but there is one thing that most people have not experienced and that is the power of God flowing through them. But if you are being tugged on by the Holy Spirit to repent you have to but confess and turn away from your sins and have not committed the unforgivable sin
Thank you Lord for forgiving my sins amen.
It's not necessary to confess for every sin besides are you able to remember all sin done ... confess to one another and pray for each other is to be done. Once for all time forgiven ...no more is the law of sin and death it's now the righteousness of God by faith in Spirit to renew my mind to finish work of Jesus , yes that's right I am saying as a believer "he remembers my sin no more". Only on passage in NT that everybody says is 1John 1:9 for believing people to confess , this is about the gnostics that passage was written to because they denied being a sinner altogether thus John says this to them as unbelievers. .amen
Great question. For brevity, here is what Pastor John MacArthur said: "the writer of Hebrews is speaking to the unsaved who have heard the truth and acknowledged it, but who have hesitated to embrace Christ. The Holy Spirit warns them, “You had better come to Christ now, for if you fall away it will be impossible for you to come again to the point of repentance.” They were at the best point for repentance–full knowledge. To fall back from that would be fatal. Because they believe the warning is addressed to Christians, many interpreters hold that the passage teaches that salvation can be lost. If this interpretation were true, however, the passage would also teach that, once lost, salvation could never be regained. There would be no going back and forth, in and out of grace. But Christians are not being addressed, and it is the opportunity for receiving salvation, not salvation itself, that can be lost." Regarding the unforgivable sin, that is a rejection of Jesus Christ and His gift of salvation. No other sin is unforgivable.

Thank you for addressing these verses. It's truly a blessing.
Is it possible that in the context of this passage this condemnation refers only to Israel? My understanding of another famous passage called often times the "Unpardonable Sin" is also only something that the people of Israel could commit by ascribing the works of God the Holy Spirit during the time of Jesus' earthly ministry to Satan. The Old Testament Prophets blast the Kings and leaders of Israel from Samuel on to Malachi for their practice of claiming the God of Israel on the one hand and worshiping the gods of the nations around them on the other hand. Many of these leaders and the people of Israel had tasted of the works of the Holy Spirit time and time again as He blessed Israel and yet they rejected God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit in the end. For them there is no hope as I understand these passages. Food for thought!
Father God convict me when I stray and sin ! I have the fear of God in me ! I thank you for your word which opens my eyes to your ways ! I respect you and I love you ! In Jesus holy name I pray Amen ✝️🙏🇺🇸
When I became a Christian my "old nature" was NOT removed from me. I can still commit sins. I know by what the BIBLE says ALL my sins (past/present/future sins) have been forgiven me thru the Blood of JESUS CHRIST. Also as JESUS said once saved you cannot loose your salvation.✝🌝💕👍👍
Lord , I just want to Thank you for the message , It has made me understand that forgiving all sins is how we can move forward and you also have to forgive yourself to and thank you lord for bringing me closer to you in the in the name of Jesus amen and amen god bless 🙏

Heavenly Father, I trust and believe in You, I need You always in my life. Thank You for the chance at knowing You and loving us as Only You can. Thank You in Jesus name Amen
Thank you for sharing this message with me. I know my lord is great and his love endures forever. Thank you, Lord, for the opportunity of a life.
Thank you for answering my question and your prayer to help me understand this message. I truly believe that I am forgiven for this sin, because I chose to ask forgiveness from Christ. I am realizing that I am to blame for my sins, because I let my guard down. I listened to the wrong voice as Eve did in the garden of Eden. Once again, I am returning to prayer. Please, Christ forgive me for my foolishness of doubting God's Word and Promise. Please, help me to be a better watchman and to guard my thoughts against the evil one. Please, let me serve you and continue to guide my actions so that God's glory can be realized in my life. Please, guide my words so I can represent God in a matter pleasing to Him. Please, help me to forgive myself as you have forgiven me. For all the glory and the honor and the kingdom and everything belongs to You. In your name, I pray. Amen.
This definitely is a difficult passage if you are looking at it as this is a true follower of Christ. The way I see it is this is a professor of Christ someone who knows about Jesus, maybe even goes to church regularly (maybe a counterfeit believer) but not a possessor of Christ. They want the blessings but are not willing to pay the price. They may feel they are good people like the rich young ruler but there is something they are not willing to give up for Christ. Total surrender of self (it's not I but Christ who dwells within me) we must die to self take up our individual cross and follow Him.
Thank you for sharing. This has brought me much clarity/understanding to this passage of Scripture. Lord Jesus, thank You that I have nothing to fear! You have forgiven me of all my sins. Help me to "keep my shoulders to the wheel", not looking back, but looking forward to spending eternity with You! Help me stay focused and committed.
Thank you for shedding light on this puzzling passage. I have been a Christian for a long time, read various explanations and have not understood it never the less. I think I get it now.
Thank you. My problem is in my mind. I do believe in JESUS as my Savior. I wonder about my gifts, I struggle with doing for HIM such as spreading the gospel and reaching out to others.
So then, we are not being denied forgiveness if we seek it; we are denied forgiveness if we do NOT seek it. Makes sense. God gave us free will, so He will not force us to do something we do not want to do or that we choose not to do. Lord, I need your forgiveness and I seek it.,Please forgive my sins.
Thank you for the clarity. So many have unfortunately done this very thing. Hope and pray the lost sheep will again return. Forgiveness then again will be obtained.
Thank You. I have wondered about this Subject for quite some time Now. Your Words have given Me Clarity.
Father, I thank you for allowing me to repent, so that I can come back to you.
Well said, Amen!🙏❤
Amen
Those who were involved in the church, served on a committee, waited on tables but never tasted and saw the goodness of Jesus, his love, joy, peace and his wonderful gift of salvation often do turn away. Being a believer in Jesus is one who has experienced him and know that he is! They believe and that is a gift from God. Amen
Thank you Jesus
Amen God is good
Amen for the word. We have to ask God for forgiveness. We have to cast everything into his hands.
