How Powerful Is Our God?

January 11

Read Ephesians 1:19-23

...and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His great might that He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things under His feet and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

Reflect

Why is it important for Christians to understand how powerful God really is?

Do you ever stop to think about God’s power throughout the day? How do you seek to solve problems in your daily life? When you look at the world around you and watch the news, does it cause anxiety for you? It often does for me.

Sometimes I try to solve my own problems. I try to overcome my issues in my own strength. And sometimes, when I watch the news, I forget that God is in charge. And when it seems like evil reigns, I get discouraged.

That is why Paul prayed for his brothers and sisters in Christ to have a heightened awareness of God’s power. Paul wanted the Holy Spirit to show the Ephesians just how immeasurable God’s power is. Paul used a variety of different words to emphasize God’s superiority. But why is it so important for us to be aware of how powerful God really is?

Because those of us who believe in Christ have access to that “immeasurable greatness,” and yet we often try to live in our strength. What a shame! It is like having access to millions of dollars but living on ramen noodles in a rundown shack. Or knowing the cure to cancer but refusing to use the treatment or share it with others. It doesn’t do us, or the people around us, any good to be God’s inheritance and have vast, all-surpassing strength and might available to us if we do not use it.

But how do we access this power that is available to us? Paul models that for us by doing the very thing for the Ephesians that we need to do for each other. He was interceding in prayer on behalf of the Ephesians that the Holy Spirit would help them understand God’s power. Intercessory prayer (praying for each other) is the way to tap into God’s power and use it to accomplish God’s purposes.

Friends, like the Ephesians, we need to understand how powerful God is. He was powerful enough to raise Christ from the dead and seat Him at His right hand. He reigns far above every other power-spiritual or earthly. No one is above Him. We are the body, but He is our head.

Pray

God, You are truly the all-powerful God. No one and nothing in heaven or on earth are as powerful as You. And yet, in Christ and through Your Spirit, You share that power with me. Use Your mighty power in my life for Your purposes and for Your glory. Amen.
