High and Mighty or Humble and Meek?

November 23

Read Galatians 6:3-5

If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load.

Reflect

Why are we “deceiving ourselves” if we think too highly of ourselves?

We’ve all spent time with someone who thinks they are really something. They tout their achievements and compare themselves to others for the sake of making themselves look good. But people around them usually see the truth. They aren’t all that they think they are.

If we’re being honest, we’ve probably played this comparison game ourselves. When we feel insecure, we might compare ourselves to others and think, “Well, I serve more in the church than they do,” or “I’m more well-versed in Scripture, so I actually now better than they do,” or “At least I have never majorly screwed up like they did…”.

But friends, those of us who are led by the Spirit and walking in freedom, should know that we are lying to ourselves if we think we are superior to anyone. If we are in Christ, we have admitted that we are sinners in need of a savior! If we accept that we are saved by grace through faith, none of us can boast or brag! We did not save ourselves, and we do not deserve the grace we’ve been given.

Instead of comparing ourselves to others, Paul suggests that we “test ourselves.” Am I walking in obedience to God? Am I “carrying my own load,” which means carrying out my own God-given responsibilities to the very best of my ability? Am I becoming more and more like Jesus each day? If yes, great job! But remember, even those things are only possible by the grace of God.

Friends, test yourselves today. Look inward rather than outward. Do you have a high and mighty attitude? Or a gentle and humble heart?

Pray

Jesus, I acknowledge that I am nothing without You. I did not deserve Your grace, but You gave it to me anyway. Expose the areas of pride that I harbor in my heart and replace it with Your humility and gentleness. Amen.

As the old song goes, "It's me, it's me, it's me, Oh Lord, standing in the need of prayer!"

Holy Father, make me a servant to serve round about Your Table or wherever You have need for me. I know that I cannot speak highly of myself for I am weak. Help me to become strong in Your Word.
