Hide It Under a Bushel? NO!

November 16

Read Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV)

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Reflect

How can you let God’s light shine in your community?

How open are you with others about your faith in Jesus? Is it well-known that you are a Christian? Is it apparent in the way that you live your life? Have you ever shared the good news of the Gospel with someone else?

In today’s verses, Jesus said to “let our light shine before others.” We shouldn’t keep the good news of the Gospel to ourselves! It brings to mind the old Sunday school song, “This Little Light of Mine.” This song communicates Jesus’ message in a way that even little children can understand. We have been given the light of Jesus so we shouldn’t hide it from everyone else. We should “let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!”

In John 8:12, Jesus calls Himself the light of the world. “I am the light of the World. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Jesus is the light of the world but as His followers we have His light within us. We aren’t meant to hide His light but show it off. Our faith isn’t meant to be a hidden or downplayed aspect of our lives. It is meant to be in a prominent place.

When we let His light shine in our lives, we point people to Jesus. The world is walking in so much darkness. Without the light of Jesus, people are fumbling around in the dark searching for the way. Jesus quoted Isaiah 9:2 when He said, “the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned” (Matthew 4:16).

In the Bible, light and life always go together, and darkness and death go hand in hand. People who are walking in the light of Jesus are walking the road that leads to life everlasting. As we just learned from our study of Revelation, Jesus’s light is so radiant that it will illuminate the entire city of God forever and ever. Revelation 21:23 says there will be no need for the sun because we will get our light from the glory of the Son. Jesus is light and life.

When we let the light of Jesus shine in our lives, it also exposes sin. Sin loves to operate in the shadows. When Christians hide their light, we provide cover for sin and evil to operate.

In Ephesians 5:8-13, Paul wrote: “for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true) and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light…”

Friends, Jesus’ point in calling us salt and light is that we are supposed to be different from the rest of the world. Jesus said that we are not of this world, just as He is not of this world but that He is sending us out into the world, just as the Father sent Him into the world (John 17:16,18). Jesus has sent us out into this world to be beacons that guide people out of the darkness of sin and death and into light and life forever in Him. But if we hide His light from others, we are hiding the gift of eternal life and providing cover for sin to thrive. Let’s push back some darkness today, friends. How can you let His light shine in your life?

Pray

Lord, thank You for the light of Your truth and for the life that I have found in You. Help me stand out in the darkness and shine Your light in my community. Give me the courage to share Your Good News with those around me so that I am not keeping the gift of salvation to myself. Amen.

Lord Jesus, Your name is worthy to be shared with others as the name by which we shall be saved. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, help me to be the one who brings light to those who are in the dark with who Jesus is.
