Here Is the Church

April 12

Read Ephesians 2:19-22

So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

Reflect

Do you go to church or are you a member of His church?

Do you remember the old nursery rhyme “Here is the church, here is the steeple”? Kids would fold their hands with their fingers tucked in so that when they opened their hands you would “see all the people.” Which part is the church? The building with a steeple? Or all of the people?

In today’s verse we see Paul explain that the church is not a building. It is a group of people who belong together because of their shared faith in Jesus Christ. He Himself is the cornerstone. The most important piece! Without this Cornerstone binding us together, the church would collapse. Jesus Christ is God the Son who died for us and rose from the dead to forgive our sins and offer us the free gift of eternal life in Him.

Jesus is our Cornerstone and our foundation is the Word of God. The church trusts that the teachings of the apostles and prophets is the Word of God. Our faith is based on the fact that Jesus is who He said He was and that the teachings in Scripture about Him are true.

As more and more people believe Jesus is Lord and Savior, more members are added to His church. Paul said we are “saints and members of the household of God.” As we grow, we are being joined together into a temple for the Lord. Not into a physical building, but a place where the Holy Spirit dwells in the hearts of those who believe in Christ. Collectively, all believers make up a holy dwelling place for the Lord.

The church is not a building with or without a steeple. But the church is about all God’s people. The rest of that nursery rhyme is “close the doors and see them pray. Open the doors and they all walk away.” Friends, it is certainly important for the church to gather collectively to worship, pray, and grow together in Him. And it is my hope that when “we all walk away” from the church gathering that we are going out into the world ready and willing to share the Good News just as we have been commanded by Jesus Christ. “And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation” (Mark 16:15).

Pray

Jesus, thank You for my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. It is a blessing to belong to the household of God. Help me to be an active member of Your church who proclaims your gospel to the world. Amen.

I thank the Lord JESUS that I was raised by my Christian Family who had me in Church during my binging up; my father was the Presiding Elder of the AME Methodist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana before his death in 1975. I go to church on a regular basis now But I know the Church is within me. Thanks for reminding me in this Reading! Amen!
I did the steeple rhyme when I was a little girl. I used to pray dear Lord let me find this one day. I didn’t have to look. Our Savior brought me here and will always deliver me there where I need to be. Amen

I agree, it is a blessing to belong to the household of God. I will do my part as I proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.
Thank you Lord for grace, and not giving up on me. I went to church most of my life. Taught that was enough. Now I know that being a part of the Body of Christ is what matters. Which is continual, not just Sunday.
Thank God for new mercies everyday
Lord, I am a believer in Jesus. I have faith in Him and His Word. I thank You for my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. I want to please You and be a faithful member of Your church. In Christ Jesus name I pray, Amen.
Amen
Amen
We are the Lord's temple, to keep it holy.
Thank You Lord
Paul teaches us that today we are “...fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God” and that we are to value this citizenship above all which “grows into a holy temple in the Lord.” Just imagine all believing-souls that ever lived being untied in resurrection as a living temple of God with Christ as its foundational cornerstone!!! Come Lord Jesus come...Amen!
I here a lot of people say that they don’t go to church- because they’ve been hurt . My question to them “How many times has this sinful world hurt you , praise King Jesus!! I’ve never been hurt my Him.🙏🙏🙏
Thank you, Lord. Amen.
God desires to dwell with his chosen people. Israel had the privilege to have God be with them in the tabernacle. Moses and later the priests would go into the temple and represent the people toward God. Now by Jesus death and resurrection we who believe have received the Holy Spirit who lives in us. God made us his dwelling place. This is truly amazing and as we gather together we are collectively His church. Jesus help us to work out what we have in us, your love to others. Amen
As I said in the Daily Bible Teaching, we went through a mass exodus because the Pastor didn't adhere to following protocols of the churches and was going in a liberal way of teaching. He then decided to leave and told the membership he was being wronged, so he left and took all with him. I stayed because I am a deacon there along with another man who also stayed, and know it was not Biblical the way he caused the split. Unfortunately, this is my second encounter of a church spilt in 6 years. I pray that the truth will be exposed and that they repent.
Thank You Lord for all the brothers and sisters in my life. All bring spiritual joy. Amen
Very valuable Thanks and Amen.
Glory be to God. Truth...Amen, by the grace and help of God through Christ.
Yes! Never knew the 2nd part of the rhyme. Really appreciate this message today.
