Heed the Warning
July 22, 2020
Read Luke 16: 27-31
He answered, “Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.” Abraham replied, “They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.” “No, father Abraham”, he said, “but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.” He said to him, “If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.” (NIV)
Are the Scriptures enough evidence for you?
In this parable, Jesus told the story of a rich man and a poor man. The poor man probably suffered from a disability because it said he was “laid at his gate” to beg for food from the rich man. The rich man ignored him and lived a luxurious life.
Eventually, both men died. The rich man is described as being in torment and agony in Hades while the poor man is being comforted at Abraham’s side. First, he asks Abraham to send Lazarus to bring him water to quench his thirst and ease his suffering in the flames.
Even in hell, the rich man doesn’t get it. After years of having the means to ease Lazarus’s earthly suffering, but ignoring him, he has the gall to beg for Lazarus to ease his suffering in eternity. But the tables have turned. Abraham tells him that there is a great chasm between them, and they cannot cross sides.
So, the rich man begs for Lazarus to be sent again. This time as a messenger to warn the rich man’s brothers. But Abraham says that they have already been warned. Moses and the Prophets have warned them what will happen if they do not repent. Still, the rich man claims that if someone goes to them from the dead, then they will believe!
Abraham’s answer gives me chills. He says they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.
Friends, we do not need any more signs or divine messages from Heaven. We have been warned. We have been given a powerful word from Heaven in the Scriptures. We have received Good News. Someone did rise from the dead, and His name is Jesus! The evidence of Jesus should be more than enough to drive us to belief and repentance.
Father, thank you for Your Word. You have warned us, and you have made a way for us. Thank you for the promise of life forever with You for those who repent and believe. Amen.
