Handmade Humans - Your Daily Forward Devotional

Handmade Humans

March 8

Read Genesis 2:4-7 (ESV)

These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens. When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up–for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground–then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

When you read the word “formed” what do you picture?

Have you ever received a handmade gift? We can buy perfectly fine presents from stores and it’s nice to receive a store-bought gift. But there is just something about receiving a handmade item that feels more special. Whenever I receive a handmade gift, I understand the value of that gift in a very different way. I appreciate the time put in and the thoughtfulness of the giver. I admire the skill and talent that it took to fashion and craft the item. Handmade items are usually unique. Possibly one of a kind. Maybe even made just for me. It’s personal.

The creation account in Genesis 1 discusses how God spoke creation into being. But when the narrative gets to humans, we receive details different from the rest of creation. In Genesis 1:26-27, God said, “‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, over all the creatures that move along the ground.’ So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (NIV)

First, notice that God didn’t just say, “Let there be humans.” Instead, He said “Let us make mankind in our image.” In using the pronoun “us” He referenced the Trinity. We are made in the image of the God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God also stated a purpose which sets mankind apart—to rule the rest of His creation.

In Genesis 2, we find out more details about how God created us in His image. He took dirt from the ground and formed a man. The picture here is of an artist or a craftsman creating a beautiful work out art out of ordinary organic material. God was hands-on in making humans.

And women? Genesis 2:21-23 describes how God fashioned a woman from a rib that He had taken out of man. Again, the imagery is of God forming a woman out of a rib with His hands like a potter with clay.

God was thoughtful, purposeful, and skillful in His creative work in us. God could have created us from far away. With just a word from God in heaven, we could have suddenly existed down here on earth. And yet, God was near when He made us. He was close enough to form and fashion us. Close enough to breathe His life into our lungs. Friends, God was not a hands-off Creator. We are intimately and personally created by God.

Lord, like the Psalmist David, I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). Thank You for being near in the beginning and for being near to me now. Amen.

Lord thank you for being always near. God bless you Pastor Nat.🙏🏽
Thank You God
Thank you God so caring about me.
St. Paul's special revelations related to us in Ephesians 4:7 and Romans 8:16-17 are as intimate as one can get to God (children and "heirs of the promise" actually indwelt by the Spirit of God.) but those recent revelations do not disclose a change God's desire for intimate relationship with the climatic event of His creations. The language of Genesis, subtly reveals the loving attitude from Him toward His two new creatures. Though things have gone wrong, God has worked through time, places and people to recover that first love from us. Wonderful He is!
Praise you God, and Thank you Lord for your Creation. In Jesus's Name. Amen
You are the potter I am the clay mold me and make me more like You every day.
What a beautiful way to see God’s personal love for us. True Intimacy with our Creator.
"I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure" Psalm39:1,2
Amen. And where we can Go
"We are fearfully and wonderfully made " Psalm 139:14
Father, Help us to Forgive freely and Love unconditionally. Amen
What a beautiful and symbolic representation we have in Adam, created by God in his very image as an earthly son, perfect like Jesus and giving him dominion over an earthly paradise. The bridegroom of Eve, also created by God, but formed and born from his rib, as we are reborn in Christ, as one flesh...
Because God was hands-on during creation, He set a standard of intimacy. He welcomes us into an intimate, personal relationship with Him.
Thank God for giving us another beautiful day and thank you pastor Nat for the devotional Amen
As often stated, Genesis 1-11 holds the foundation or bedrock of our Christian beliefs and experience. Inside that, on Day 6, the creation of man and woman is God’s pinnacle act of all creation. We indeed need to remember these creative acts are eternal gifts - until man falls and their bodies become perishable but our spirits remains external. Eternal!!! Yes, as believers we do indeed reflect the image of our Trine God, even in this fall end state. To this end, as God first reveals light before creating all the universe, let us strive to reflect His lLight. Praise the Lord from Whom all blessings flow...Amen!!
We were made by God in a kind and loving fashion. We must continue to receive his love through Jesus by his forgiveness of our sins. We must love others in a kind and forgiving way. Jesus help us be like you. Amen
Thank you, Lord. Amen.
It's amazing that God took the time to form us as personal as he did.
Glory be to God. Truth...Amen, by the grace and help of God.
This helps us remember where we all come from
