Good Stewardship

July 28

Read Matthew 25:21 (ESV)

His master said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.”

What has God given to you that you should steward well?

Do you remember Jesus’ parable of the Talents? You can read all of it in Matthew 25:14-30. A man was going away on a journey and he entrusted some of his wealth to each of his slaves. To the first slave, he gave five talents. While the master was away, this slave traded wisely with those 5 talents and gained his master five more talents. To the second slave, the man gave two talents. This man also invested wisely and gained two more talents for his master while he was gone. To the last slave, the man gave only one talent which the slave hid in the ground until the master returned.

When the master returned, he said to the first two servants, “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.” (vv. 21, 23). But to the last slave, he said, “You wicked and slothful servant! ... You ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest” (vv.26, 27).

Likewise, God has entrusted us with various gifts and blessings which He expects us to manage responsibly. He has given us resources such as time, money, abilities, and opportunities. He expects us to put what He has given us to good use. He expects us to invest them wisely for His Kingdom. He didn’t give us these things only for us to waste them. He gave them to us to use!

Notice that the man was pleased with the slaves who put their gifts to good use. But he was angry with the slave who put his gift away and did nothing with it. If we want to please God, we should use what He has blessed us with. What a tragedy it is to waste what He has given to us!

One day, we will all stand before God and account for our deeds. Those who have been faithful will receive the ultimate reward—a commendation and eternal joy in the Lord! But those who have been found unfaithful and lazy will be rebuked and punished. In the parable, the master said of the slothful servant, “and cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (v. 30).

Friend, do you want to hear “Well done my good and faithful servant?” Then, faithfully steward what God has given you. Do not waste your time or opportunities. Do not be selfish with your money. Do not be too lazy to use your abilities. God is expecting us to use whatever He has given us to advance and increase His Kingdom. Are you stewarding the resources God has given to you wisely or wastefully?

Lord, thank You for everything that You have given to me. I know that everything that I have is from You and belongs to You. Help me to use these gifts for Your Kingdom and Your glory. When You return someday, I long to hear “Well, done good and faithful servant.” Amen.

Lord Jesus, all things come from You and to You all things belong. Thank You Lord for the simple gifts You have given me and for the opportunity to invest them for Your honour and for Your glory. Lord, I want to hear, "well done" from You.
