God’s Will Be Done

October 21

Read Mathew 6:9-10

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your Kingdom come, Your will be done. On earth as it is in heaven.

Reflect: How does God’s fatherhood and kingship impact how you pray?

One evening, I was reading the news about a recent presidential debate. The state of our country was weighing heavily on my mind. I began to wonder what kind of America my kids were going to grow up in. I started making a list in my head of all the wrongs I would pray for God to right in our country.

As I tucked my kids into bed, we prayed the Lord’s Prayer together. And I realized that in my concern for my country, I might be missing the point.

Do you remember that Jesus’s disciples missed the point, too? They were living under Roman oppression and they thought Jesus was there to set them free. Jesus was there to set them free, but not from the Roman Empire. At least, not in the way they thought He would.

Jesus did not come to overthrow Caesar and become an earthly king that would fix the political problems of their time. Many called Him “King of the Jews”. Some hoped that He would restore the kingdom of Israel in the dynasty of David. Others were afraid that He would overthrow their political power. Before He ascended to heaven, the disciples asked him, “Lord is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” They were wrapped up in earthly politics instead of the spiritual kingdom Jesus had established. The kingdom of God was at hand because of the divine rule Jesus had in believer’s hearts, not because He was now establishing His literal kingdom. That is still a future event.

I wonder how many Americans have also missed the point. Are we so busy praying for the future of our country that we forget to pray for God’s will and His Kingdom to come? Don’t misunderstand me. In the Scriptures, we see numerous models of God’s people fervently praying for their nation and we would do well to do the same for ours.

But we can’t lose sight of the reality that God’s kingdom is still coming. His kingdom is the only perfect kingdom. The best possible kingdom for ourselves and our children.

God can surely act for our country’s benefit in response to our prayers for America. And I hope He does. We should definitely participate by serving in our communities and voting. But remember, we should be praying for His kingdom to come and His will to be done, not ours.

Pray

God, I love America and I pray that You would bless it and restore unity to us. But I know that Your Kingdom and Your Will are greater than any worldly nation or political system. Keep my eyes fixed on Your Kingdom issues and my heart set on eternity. Amen.

Our Father Who arts in Heaven, hollowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the Kingdom, power and glory forever, Amen.
