Forgiving Myself - Your Daily Forward Devotional

Forgiving Myself

December 14

Read Romans 8:1-2

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

Is it ever difficult for you to forgive yourself? How does that keep you in bondage?

It can be difficult for many people to forgive themselves. We think things like, “How could I be so stupid!” and “I let so many people down.” Sometimes we replay our bad decisions over and over in our minds and berate ourselves the entire time. We think things like, “I know God has forgiven me, but I will never forgive myself!”

But friends, if Jesus forgives us, we should forgive ourselves. He died to free us from our sins. If we cling to our sins in unforgiveness, we are not fully accepting Jesus’s work on the cross on our behalf. It’s like saying, “Yeah, Jesus, I know you sacrificed greatly to free me, but I’m going to hold myself a prisoner to my past sins as self-punishment.” That is unnecessary and useless.

Jesus died to give you life! He died to set you free from the laws of sin and death. If you are in Jesus Christ, when God looks at you, He sees Jesus, not your sins. He does not condemn you, so why do you condemn yourself? Psalm 103:10-12 confirms this: “He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does He remove our transgressions from us.”

If you are struggling with forgiving yourself, I encourage you to reflect on what Jesus did for you on the cross. Now ask yourself, Is there anything more I can actually do to add to the work Jesus did to forgive me? Am I capable of doing enough penance to pay God back for my sins? The answer is no and no. If you could disciple yourself and have that be enough, Jesus would not have needed to die!

Rest in the work of Jesus Christ on the cross, friends. Let your sin go. Do not cling to it in unforgiveness. In Christ, you have been set free. There is now no condemnation! So walk in the forgiveness and freedom that Jesus intended for you.

Jesus, sometimes I struggle to forgive myself. I am so ashamed of my sin. But You do not condemn me. Your sacrifice on the cross is more than enough. You paid the penalty, so I do not need to anymore. Help me to let my sin go and rest in You. Amen.

Thanks you Jesus for forgiving me of my sins and giving me strength to forgive myself for all my sins of the past. I love you and looking forward to spending eternity with You and the Father. Amen
I struggle a lot with my past sins although I know that God has forgiving me!
Thank you for letting me feel free and know God set me free through Jesus
Thank you Almighty God Amen
You have not condemned me but You have forgiven me even when I have been undeserving of Your love and forgiveness. Thank You Lord Jesus for Your finished work on the cross and thank You for Your grace. Amen.
Thanks you Jesus for forgiveness
I have no condemnation.
Tx reminds of the verse- "I am crucified with Christ, never the less I live yet not I but Christ who lives in me, and the live I now live I live by the faith of the Son of God who died and gave Himself for me"! Blessings, J
I do struggle with this, of not forgiving myself for my last sins. But I do know and believe in JESUS CHRIST and what HE did on the cross. Thank you JESUS!
It's amazing how we can treat each other, but God sees it all. He cares about it all. Because we have been forgiven greatly, we can and should forgive freely. This is only possible in His power. I pray this for us all.
Satan tries daily to deter us in our walk with Christ by bringing up our past. He's a liar and a deceiver. Resist the devil. God's grace is sufficient and complete. Rest in it, Debra! God bless! I am praying fo you and your sisters! ~Pastor Nat
Wow. Thank you for sharing. God's grace is truly amazing. God does ask that we change in His power, but no longer are we defined by our past. No longer are we identified by what we've done, but by who He is! Freedom!!!
Great words. Forgiveness and repentance are connected. I wish more pastors preached this. God saves us from our sins and saves us to a new life. That's salvation. That's hope. That's what God provides!
Thanks for this devotional.
I thank God for another week and thank you pastor Nat for the devotional and I believe my God will get me through this week Amen
Only by God’s timing this Monday morning devotional and prayer came. Thank You Jesus for Your willing sacrifices for my sins. It was not only truly horrific the way You were hung on the Cross but also it was done not in a selfish way.
Simply timely on this Monday morning devotional and prayer. Thank you Lord Jesus for Your willing sacrifices for my sins. I am hard on myself as should be. Your sacrifice was for nothing.
Thank You Father that You have buried our sins in the sea of forgetfulness, and hung a sign up that says no fishing allowed. But every now and then we will be tempted to fish there or Satan who our accuser will tell us it's ok God doesn't mind. That's when we can stand on your truth of Your Word.
Father, thank You for Your Son's sacrifice and the forgiveness of our sins. Father, I do beat myself up for my past sins (bad decisions), I am needing to let that way of thinking and believing go. I put my trust and belief in You, Father. I need Your help with this Father. I thank You, and Pray this prayer in Your Son Jesus name, Amen.
I am one who has a hard time forgiving myself for past sins, wrong decisions that not only affected me, but also the people I love the most. I wish I could go back in the past and do it over, knowing what I know now. I wish so bad that I had the relationship with God that I have now. Please pray with me to overcome these bad feelings. Thank you, Kim
Thanks for today's encouragement Pastor Nat! Lord Jesus, thank You for paying the penalty for all my sins at the cross, no more struggling to forgive myself. I am no longer under condemnation. Thank You for being " my Righteousness". I am fully "clothed" in You and I am rejoicing!! Amen.
Forgiveness and repentance are connected. Turning from your sin to Jesus and his mercy is another way of saying it. I still struggle with my sins often and when I fall the guilt and shame is real. I often wonder if I will ever have victory over them and I go for awhile without falling and it is so nice pleasing the Lord. I know the Bible says that Jesus has and will forgive. It truly is amazing and a little hard to believe if you are as old as I am and still struggling. I fall in my face thanking you Jesus there is no place to go for you have the words of eternal life. Amen
45 years ago I got saved as a young, single mom with 2 kids. My life changed completely. About 10 years after that, I was still not forgiving myself for all I had done prior to salvation. Then I went to the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, in Maryland, and sat watching the boats go up to Baltimore. Normally, I could see the eastern shore with no issue. But that day.. God hid it and then the verse you mentioned from Ps. 103 came to mind. God had moved my sins over there where we can't see them! Not really--I know. But it hit me that if God could forgive me and remove the sin, who am I to say I was better than God? It struck me that I was awfully bold to say, but I can't forgive myself. What!!! That made no sense. From that time on, I was able to confess and ask for God to forgive me, and then also let it go. No more thinking I'm better than God! Thanks for your words of encouragement!
Lord thank you for your unselfish ways. Through you, I am set free and unshackled from sin. Lord God because of your sacrifice I can now stand before our Father sinless. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
This is something I’ve lived with for fifty years. I struggle between “remembering the pit from which I have been” to “my sins are in the deepest ocean and that I need to remember that Jesus has put up a no fishing sign” (from Corrie Ten Boom). The devil often reminds me the older I get about the pit. Thank you
Good reminder, thank you! Jesus died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins and we should never negate this. So often our sin has consequences or bad fruit of its own which we must own up to and end, but not relive. Sometimes it is the shame of these consequences that clause us to not forgive ourselves. May we turn these into the constant reminder of the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior....
Please continue to pray for my sisters Lisa and Linda, both with very serious health issues Please pray that I will take this devotional to heart, and forgive myself for terrible things I did in my past. I know my Father has forgiven me, but Satan constantly throws these things up at me. Thank you so very much!
I am so tired of remembering what I have done or why/what others do to me. I feel that those closest to me hurt me the most. Thank you
Truth...Amen, by the grace and help of God.
Thank you, I have been struggling with forgiving myself of something that happened you showed me that I don't need to struggle anymore.
Help Me Jesus Too Trust You And Move Forward , Amen
