Eat What Is Good

December 1

Read Isaiah 55:1-2

“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.”

How do we apply the precept of “eating what is good” to our spiritual lives?

My kids love candy. In fact, when they come home from school, the first thing they want to do is dig into their stash from trick or treating. But they come back asking for a real snack within minutes. “I’m still hungry!” they cry. Unfortunately, the candy doesn’t satisfy them for long. The candy is delicious, and it seems like a good choice in the moment. But it doesn’t offer any long term fulfillment and has no nutritional value. Candy is just empty calories.

Many people are filling up on candy in their spiritual lives only to find that it does not satisfy. They admit to feeling empty inside and look to worldly things to fill the void. Success, fame, image, social media, binge-watching TV, alcohol, drugs, illicit relationships...No matter what they try, the hunger remains.

We cannot fill up on the candy of this world and expect it to satisfy us long term. If we are hungry or thirsty deep in our souls, God gave us the solution through the prophet Isaiah. He said to “Come,” and He said to “eat what is good.” He also said that it is free. What is this good food that you can get for free? The bread of life. In John 6:35, Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

You do not have to go through your life, feeling empty in your soul. You do not have to feel spiritually stuck. The invitation is open to everyone, and it is free. Come! Go to Jesus, spend time in the Word daily, seek Him through prayer, and as you do, you will find yourself filling up your soul with that which can satisfy.

Jesus, I know that I sometimes look to the empty things of this world to satisfy the longings of my heart. But it is futile. Only You can satisfy. Fill me up with your “good food” today, Lord. It is You I am hungry and thirsty for. Amen.

Like so many before, I used to feed on the candy of this world, but thank You Lord Jesus for rescuing me from hunger, and for feeding me with the Bread of Life.
What a beautiful devotion. Thank you, Pastor Nat. So thankful for the things of God that satisfy my longing heart like nothing else. ♡
Jesus lived His entire life in surrender to His Father's will. He calls us to do the same. Jesus is the bread of life. He is what is good. Fill me up with your good food Lord, and I will never go hungry!
Read and feed on the word of God.
Amen Jesus you are the bread of life that fills the deep dark emptiness of our souls ! You are the light of the world and my Lord and savior! Amen ✝️🙏🇺🇸🎄
Lord, turning to things of the world will never satisfy us. We need to turn to You, we belive and trust You, Lord, You will satisfy our souls. Leaving us filled and never thirsty or hungry. Allow me to come to You. In the mighty name of Christ Jesus I pray, Amen.
Just what I'm yearning for I need to be filled with God's holy spirit Thanks for your encouraging words of wisdom I love you Lord in the name of Jesus Christ Amen.
In Jesus is life and he is the light of men Jesus said man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God Paul says let your heart in your mind be filled with the word of God that you may be rooted and grounded in him ministering to your cells and spiritual hymns songs admonishing one another daily through the word of God
Only a relationship with God can fill the emptiness many try to fill with relationships, substances, or material things. Yes, we need relationships, but the most important one is with God. He's the perfect fit!
Hallelujah, Amen!! Thank you Pastor Nat for reiterating this truth today! Need to be reminded of it. Lord Jesus, I come to You today asking You to fill me up "with Living Water", so I'll never be thirsty again, and have no desire for the fleeting things of this world. Thanks, "in You I have all that I need for life and Godliness". Amen🙏 .
Forgive me, Lord Jesus Christ, from turning to empty, worldly things like tv, and change me to feed on You and drink from Your Living Water that never will run dry & read Your Living Word out loud that will never return to You void. Help me to decrease and You to increase in me.🙏❤ Lucille
Thank you Lord for being the bread that I hunger for, fills me, and sustains me spiritually.
So simple but so true nothing can bring true joy and blessed peace than it is to know, trust and obey Jesus Christ. Jesus made us for himself and he along will satisfy our longings. Jesus as we celebrate the advent season let us delight in our longings for you and share the love you give us with others. Amen
Mt 4.4....every word.
Truth....Amen, by the grace and help of God.
Amen only jesus satisfies thank you for this reminder
As I reflect, I see Jesus at the well and I hear the conversation with the Samaritan woman... "if you knew the gift of God and who it is that ask you for a drink... you would ask... He would give you living water" Trading in the temporary for what is good and lasting. I am also led to reflect on Esau and Jacob as told in Genesis 25 where Esau gave up his birthright for food. Esau saw value in the temporary satisfaction of the food while Jacob by faith saw value in the heritage of the birthright. Faith causes us to go deeper for the good that God offers and God is. As we read the word of God we nourish our faith. Let us today and always be very intentional about choosing the good gift that God has predestined for our lives in Christ Jesus.
