Driven by Doubt

August 12, 2020

Read John 20: 27-29

Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Do you have any doubts about Jesus? How do you handle them?

I think Thomas often gets a bad rap. I grew up with the story of Thomas being used as a sort of cautionary tale that we should just take Jesus at His word and believe blindly. But I don’t think that’s what was necessarily intended here. After all, it seems strange that Jesus would present us with so much evidence if He never wanted us to look for it.

I like Thomas because he was a truth-seeker. He doubted until he had the facts, but once he knew the truth, he was all in. Loyal until the end. In John 20:25, the other disciples told him that they had seen Jesus. But he wasn’t willing to believe until he had put his hand in his side and saw the holes in his hands. Once he saw the evidence, he exclaimed, “My Lord and my God!” He had seen the evidence, accepted the truth, and proclaimed the truth.

Jesus could handle Thomas’s doubt. Yes, He told Thomas to stop doubting and believe, but He also provided the exact evidence that Thomas was asking for. Jesus allowed Thomas to express his doubt, and then Jesus gave him what he needed to bring him around to belief.

“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.” There would be generations following the disciples that have no choice but to believe in Jesus without seeing Him in the flesh. We don’t have the physical evidence of His hands and His side. But we have His Word. We have eyewitness accounts. We have historical documents.

They were asked to follow the testimony of a group of men who were gullible and easy to trick. We are believing the testimony of people who had physical evidence. They were so convinced that they were willing to die proclaiming the truth. They would not recant what they had seen.

If you are struggling with doubt, I encourage you to do as Thomas did. Ask Jesus to show you the evidence. Use your doubts to drive your search for the truth. If you seek Him, you will find Him.

Jesus, I confess that sometimes I have doubts. Please reveal yourself to me and show me evidence that strengthens my faith. Amen.

Lord in my times of trouble I have questioned all I was going through...not your existance! However, I felt there was something that I was to do that I was not doing and so the stress I was going through made me stronger in my faith .
As a new convert I find that there are times when I feel so disconnected. Im hopeful that this will change over time as I do believe and accept that Jesus is my saviour.
Thanks for the message.

Let not your heart be troubled that's what the Bible says. I've come to realize that if I have doubt my heart is troubled. So I thank God for when I doubt or my heart is troubled He comforts me. Thank you. I love you Daddy.
At times when I am feeling overwhelmed, I'm just like Thomas! Then I remember how Soverign, mighty, awesome, trustworthy, faithful, and good God is! His love has no end! I remember and am filled with joy and peace! Lord, forgive me for the times when the enemy attack, and I would want to doubt. Strengthen me in my areas of weakness. I declare: "...I do believe; help me to overcome my unbelief".(Mark 9v24).
Thank you Lord for always reminding us to see you first, so that we may have a peaceful day. Thank you. In Jesus name. Amen
My God is faithful and will always remain faithful. I love God so much, and I will remain in His goodness. 🙏

Faith is a gift and we live by faith. But faith is not hopeful if it already has what it hopes for. Therefore let us doubt less and live by faith that God is faithful to his word the Lord Jesus. Lord I believe please help my unbelief! Amen
😢 So sorry. It sounds like you are holding on to your faith and will definitely see your wife again, both of you with perfect bodies.
I lost my wife last October to second hand cigarette smoke that gave her throat cancer. I will never understand why. She didn,t smoke but never the same she is gone now and she passed in her sleep peacefully after 9 years of living with a feeding tube because she couldn,t swallow food or drink because the food would go into her lungs and give her pneumonia. I miss her so much that the pain of it all is killing me now. I pray in my Lord and Saviour Yeshua Jesus Christ that I will see her again in Heaven beside Christ with her perfect new body enjoying a Holy meal with him and everyone else that has put faith in Jesus Christ and believing his word of eternal life. Lord Jesus Christ I need you to show me you are real and give me hope that all this is going to be ok and you are coming soon to stop my tears and pain of going thru the rest of my life without my wife and that soon we will all be with you in Heaven forever in your presence. In your Holy Blessed name I pray,Amen.💖🙏🙏🙏🙏
I believe with all my heart and soul. I work in an office where there are Muslims, Hindus, Jewish, and coworkers who don’t have or care to have any belief in God. Pray that I can reach these people with saving grace of Jesus. Ephesians 2:8-9.

I have been a Christian for a long time before Jesus filled me with his Holy all made sense once Jesus filled me with Holy Spirit my eye where open , I read & experience the Power of the Holy Ghost & the evidence of Speaking in an unknown tongue ,Life begun to make since according to Acts 2:38,I’m Gratful for the Change, I’ll never forget that Day🙏❤️😄
I like that Thomas doubted until he had the answer. Once he did he was SURE. I believe because of what I have seen in my life. I have NO DOUBT!
