Don't Take My Word For It

October 6

Read Proverbs 2:1-5

My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments within you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding, yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.

Reflect

What are some ways that you seek and search for insight and understanding of God's Word?

In America today, we have plenty of access to spiritual resources. I think the word "plethora" applies here. Walk into a Christian bookstore or even just the Christian section of a secular bookstore, and the shelves are loaded with resources to help you grow in your faith. There are even more options online! But not all Bible resources are created equal. These resources are not infallible, except for the Scriptures, of course! They are the interpretations of man. Many of these resources are written by trusted Biblical scholars and can be extremely helpful. Unfortunately, many others are not as trustworthy, and some can actually be dangerous doctrines. We need to be aware of this and have the discernment to be able to tell the difference.

So how do you know if what you are reading about God is true? Read Scripture for yourself. Whenever possible, crack open your own copy of the Bible and make sure that an author's teaching is backed up with Scripture.

Solomon also wrote that you should "call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding." Don't get frustrated if a part of the text seems confusing or unclear. Instead, pray. Ask God to give You insight. Ask for discernment. Ask Him to help you make sense of His words. God has revealed Himself to us in His Word. But we have to search it!

Solomon says that we should "seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasure." We won't find something valuable or of real worth in what we read in the Bible if we do not dedicate ourselves to the discovery. The wisdom and understanding that we receive from God's Word is valuable. It is worth the investigation.

There are plenty of trustworthy resources out there to help you grow in your faith. In fact, at Back to the Bible, that is our number 1 priority. We aim to move you closer to Jesus today than yesterday by teaching sound Biblical doctrine that you can trust. Even so, we always encourage you to open your Bible and read it for yourself.

Pray

God, thank You for revealing Yourself to us in Your Word. Help me to understand what I am reading so that I can uncover more discoveries about who You are. Amen.
