Don't Take My Word For It - Your Daily Forward Devotional

Don't Take My Word For It

October 6

Read Proverbs 2:1-5

My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments within you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding, yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.

What are some ways that you seek and search for insight and understanding of God's Word?

In America today, we have plenty of access to spiritual resources. I think the word "plethora" applies here. Walk into a Christian bookstore or even just the Christian section of a secular bookstore, and the shelves are loaded with resources to help you grow in your faith. There are even more options online! But not all Bible resources are created equal. These resources are not infallible, except for the Scriptures, of course! They are the interpretations of man. Many of these resources are written by trusted Biblical scholars and can be extremely helpful. Unfortunately, many others are not as trustworthy, and some can actually be dangerous doctrines. We need to be aware of this and have the discernment to be able to tell the difference.

So how do you know if what you are reading about God is true? Read Scripture for yourself. Whenever possible, crack open your own copy of the Bible and make sure that an author's teaching is backed up with Scripture.

Solomon also wrote that you should "call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding." Don't get frustrated if a part of the text seems confusing or unclear. Instead, pray. Ask God to give You insight. Ask for discernment. Ask Him to help you make sense of His words. God has revealed Himself to us in His Word. But we have to search it!

Solomon says that we should "seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasure." We won't find something valuable or of real worth in what we read in the Bible if we do not dedicate ourselves to the discovery. The wisdom and understanding that we receive from God's Word is valuable. It is worth the investigation.

There are plenty of trustworthy resources out there to help you grow in your faith. In fact, at Back to the Bible, that is our number 1 priority. We aim to move you closer to Jesus today than yesterday by teaching sound Biblical doctrine that you can trust. Even so, we always encourage you to open your Bible and read it for yourself.

God, thank You for revealing Yourself to us in Your Word. Help me to understand what I am reading so that I can uncover more discoveries about who You are. Amen.

Lord Jesus, I love to read Your word. Teach me how to hear and remember what I read.
Hey Chaplain. I can understand your frustration. Paul felt the same way. Some people aren't willing to hear correction and submit to God. The best thing we can do is pray for them and pray we respond with wisdom.
That is amazing! We are glad you are here!
We are praying for God's strength for each step you take!
@Tyrone - thank you! Our number one priority is helping people move closer to God each day!
Lord help me to seek your Word more and more everyday. Help me understand your purpose in me. Amen
Thank you Lord for the wisdom and understanding that I receive from your valuable Word.
My son, 1) if you receive my words and 2)treasure up my commandments with you, 3) making your ear attentive to wisdom and 4) inclining your heart to understanding, 5) if you seek it like silver and 6)search it as for hidden treasures, 6) then you will understand the fear of the Lord; the fear of the lord is the beginning of the knowledge of the Lord and 7) find the knowledge of God.
Thank you all for all you do in trying to help people come to know our Lord May God Bless everyone who’s involved and everybody who’s with us
I need HIS word to comfort me and help me understand the loss of my home and possessions. I need to be confident that HE will see me through this, as HE saw me through the death of my young husband and also my only child.
I am so deeply grateful for God's Holy Word! I hunger for it every day. Thank you Father for your scriptures. Please help me to grow in your word daily. In Jesus' precious name, Amen!

I can spend more than a lifetime in Just the Bible, I sometimes spend a day on one "Word" or verse. The most important thing is to just Do it? Make time for the Lord 🙏, He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is the Peace in these dark and troubling times, He's coming back for us soon. 😊🙏
Father God I want to know more about You. Father give me the discernment I need to know what Your words are saying and the ability to apply it to my life. Guard me against false prophets, and teaching. I am so grateful for knowing that I can go to Your word and read what thus says the Lord. Keep me focused. In Jesus precious name I pray, Amen.

You will find me when you seek me with all of your heart. Lord Jesus help me to desire you and your word like I would desire a feast when I am very thirsty. My soul needs your food so I may trust you and glorify you today. Amen
I get extremely frustrated with people who think they are well-read in their understanding of the scriptures, and yet their doctrines are often twisted and convoluted, so much so that they are preaching another Gospel all together! They won't be corrected by scriptures, as their viewpoints are full of the conceits of their own understanding - HELP!
Truth...Amen, by the grace and help of God.
Thanks for reminding us to filter everything through scripture.
Thank you Pastor Nat, I need to be able to know God by understanding his word and be able to discern in Jesus name amen
