Don’t Be Foolish

July 7, 2020

Read Psalm 14: 1-2

The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good. The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God.

Reflect

According to these verses, what is foolishness? What is the opposite of this foolishness?

I do not usually associate being foolish with being wicked. Lacking intelligence? Maybe. Ignorant? Sure. But wicked? However, the fools David referred to in this Psalm were just that.

What makes a foolish person wicked? Verse one says a fool denies God’s existence and is corrupt. When someone denies God, they live contrary to how God tells us to live. In fact, that is often the motivation for denying God’s existence in the first place. A fool says, “I want to live however I want. I don’t want God telling me what to do.”

That isn’t just denial, it’s defiance. We should know that living in defiance to God will have severe consequences. It is the definition of foolishness to know the definite negative consequences of an action and yet proceed anyway. In this case, the consequence is judgment and everlasting torment. Only a fool would pursue that!

So what is the opposite of foolishness? Wisdom. Psalm 111:10 says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, all who follow his precepts have good understanding…” Wisdom acknowledges God, gives Him the respect that He is worthy of, and seeks to follow His commands.

In Psalm 14, verse 2, the LORD is looking down from heaven for someone who understands and seeks God. The LORD is looking for someone who is wise.

Wisdom is the fear of the LORD and folly is denying Him. Are you living wisely?

Pray

Lord, I want to live wisely. Help me to follow your commands and walk in obedience to you. Amen.

I pray daily for the one's who don't know God and become wise and seek after Him because they don't know what they are missing. He's awesome, loving, compassionate and etc.

I lived my 53 years of my life without God and doing whatever I wanted not believing in God because of all my losses. I lost my dad when I was just 19 years old and my big brother a couple of years later to turn around and my left me with my two kids and was so angry and hurt. But then finally woke up and got saved October 6 2019 and I can't say my life is any easier but I have been blessed and now truly believe in God. Not fully understanding everything I am learning every day that God does truly love me. I thank Jesus today for not giving up on me and saving this old soul. In the name of Jesus, Amen

Psalm 14:2 This should be my prayer, when the Lord is looking down to see that someone is praying for wisdom from God.
