Discovered Treasure

January 25

Read Ephesians 3:8-9

To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for the ages in God, who created all things…

Reflect

What are the riches of Christ? What makes them unsearchable?

Many kids (and those young at heart) are obsessed with the idea of buried treasure. There is just something about the epic adventure of following a treasure map across dangerous seas to the X that marks the spot and uncovering riches that have been hidden for centuries. Paul tells us that the ultimate treasure, Jesus Christ, has been discovered and that it was his mission to share that treasure with the world.

But what are the “riches of Christ”? The riches of Christ are everything that He is and everything that He has. All of His wisdom, all of His truth, all of His goodness, all of His mercy, all of His compassion, all of His power, all of His love, all of His glory and splendor, all of His blessings, etc.

These riches are unsearchable. Not because we can’t find them but because we will never stop discovering them. The riches are vast and deep and wide. Some translations say these riches are “exceeding”, “unfathomable”, or “untraceable”. In Romans 11:33 Paul exclaimed, “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgements and how inscrutable His ways!” We can keep digging through the riches of Christ for all eternity and never reach the end of His glorious wealth.

God’s people had been waiting for their Messiah. They knew a Savior was coming but they didn’t know the details. The treasure was buried. But it isn’t anymore! The treasure of Jesus Christ has been revealed. In fact, Paul couldn't believe how blessed he was to have been entrusted by God to share the treasure of Jesus Christ with the Gentiles and the rest of the world. Remember, Paul had been a persecutor of the early church before his conversion. He had put Christians to death! And yet, God blessed him with a calling that was a high honor - preaching the riches of Christ.

Friends, God’s master plan of salvation through Jesus Christ and His plan to make one body out of both Jew and Gentile used to be a mystery. It was buried treasure! But through Christ, it has been revealed to us. Are you ready to start digging for treasure? God’s Word is the place to start.

Pray

Jesus, You are vast and unmeasurable. We could never discover all there is to know about You and yet, You have revealed Yourself to us. We can seek You. We can search for Your truth. Guide us in our quest to know You through the Scriptures and make You known. Amen.
