Christ is Sufficient
Read Colossians 2:9-10 (ESV)
For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.
Paul states that Christ is God in the flesh. What does that mean for those of us who believe in Him?
Have you ever been told that you need the Gospel plus something else? For example, maybe you’ve been told that in order to be saved you need to trust in Jesus for salvation but also pray a certain prayer a certain number of times, fast on a regular basis, or observe certain holy days. Or maybe you believe that the Bible is the source of wisdom from God but you’ve been told that you should also consult horoscopes or a psychic in order to help you make decisions. Or maybe you’ve expressed that you are a Christian and had someone respond with something like, “Oh awesome! I love Jesus, too, but I also follow the teachings of Buddha.”
But in today’s verses, Paul makes it clear that Christ alone is sufficient for salvation. He is sufficient because He is God. Paul says that everything that makes God who He is, dwells in Christ’s body. All of God’s being, all of His attributes, are made visible in Christ. He is God in the flesh. Paul also stated that Christ is the head of every ruler. There is no earthly authority that doesn’t ultimately answer to Him. As God, the fullness of God’s authority is in Christ.
But what is even more amazing is that Paul wrote: “and you have been filled in him.” Take a moment to let that truth sink in. We have been filled up with Jesus—the one who is filled with deity. The one who is in charge of the universe.
If you follow this thought through to its logical conclusion, why would we ever need anything else? Why would we need worldly philosophy or empty rituals? Why would we need to try to save ourselves through works and good deeds? We have been made complete because of our union with Christ! Nothing needs to be added. Nothing else can be added. He is the fullness of God and we have been filled with Him. Isn’t that amazing?
Friends, Christ is sufficient. We do not need to add any false teachings to our faith. And we shouldn’t! We have been saved through Christ alone. If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you have been made fully complete in Him. He is sufficient. Nothing else will fill you. Nothing else can satisfy you. No one else can save you.
Jesus, You are more than enough. Keep me from adding anything false to Your Gospel. You are God and You have all power, authority, and wisdom. Your sacrifice for me was sufficient. Why would I ever seek anyone or anything else? Amen.
