Chewing on God’s Word

May 28, 2020

Read Psalm 33:4-7

“For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord. By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host. He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap; he puts the deeps in storehouses.”

In what ways is the Word of the Lord upright? How does receiving God’s Word draw us into a deeper relationship with Him?

Eugene H. Peterson is a Bible scholar who spent a big part of his life translating Scripture into a user-friendly version we know as The Message. Take a look at what he says about receiving Scripture into our minds: “Words spoken or written to us under the metaphor of eating, words to be freely taken in, tasted, chewed, savored, swallowed, and digested, have a very different effect on us from those that come at us from the outside, whether in the form of propaganda or information.” (Eugene H. Peterson, Eat This Book, Grand Rapids, MI: William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 2006, pp. 10-11.)

In other words, receiving Scripture is much more than an information-gathering pursuit. In fact, Bible study alone will not give us eternal life. Remember the Pharisees in Jesus’ day? They often memorized entire texts, yet they failed to experience the truths found in God’s Word. “It is a subtle temptation to prefer the book to the Author,” Henry T. Blackaby warns. “A book will not confront you about your sin; the Author will. Books can be ignored; it is much harder to avoid the Author when He is seeking a relationship with you.” (Henry T. Blackaby, Experiencing God Day-by-Day, Nashville: Broadman & Holman, © 1998, 110.)

Instead, receiving God’s Word daily is all about metabolizing God’s life-giving words. We allow His message to become ours; we invite His life to surge through us. The goal is to know Jesus better, to walk with Him, to become like Him ... to have a deeper relationship with Him.

The Scriptures help us to do this.

Lord, I want Your life to surge through me. Help me to receive and metabolize Scripture every day. Amen.

God meets us where we are at and never leaves us in the mess that He found us in. Praise the Lord.
