Read: Acts 17:11-12
Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.
What did the Bereans do that resulted in many believing Paul’s message?
You may have heard the word “Berean” before. In fact, many churches are called a “Berean church.” Where did this name come from? In Acts 17, Paul and Silas visit the city of Berea in Macedonia. They had just come from Thessalonica, where Paul preached in the synagogue. A large number of people believed him. But a large group of Jews did not, and they stirred up an angry mob and started a riot. Under the cover of night, Paul and Silas went to Berea.
We read that in Berea, they also went to preach in a synagogue. There were no riots this time. In fact, the people were eager to receive the message. But they didn’t stop at just hearing. They searched the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. The Bereans knew the Scriptures were the authority, not the interpreter.
Many Christians are starving themselves right now. They aren’t getting a steady diet of the Daily Bread. They might be counting on a few verses on Instagram to get them through the day. They listen to podcasts of sermons, but they never crack open their Bible. How can they be sure they are being taught what is right and what is true?
Friend, we need to do as the Bereans did. We need to examine the Scriptures every day to see if the message we are reading or listening to is true. But don’t take my word for it. Examine the Scriptures today and see for yourself.
Lord, Your Word is a gift that You have given to reveal Yourself to us. Help me to understand and interpret the Scriptures correctly and with sound doctrine. Amen.
