Be Like the Bereans - Your Daily Forward Devotional

Be Like the Bereans

September 15

Read: Acts 17:11-12

Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.

Reflect

What did the Bereans do that resulted in many believing Paul’s message?

You may have heard the word “Berean” before. In fact, many churches are called a “Berean church.” Where did this name come from? In Acts 17, Paul and Silas visit the city of Berea in  Macedonia. They had just come from Thessalonica, where Paul preached in the synagogue. A large number of people believed him. But a large group of Jews did not, and they stirred up an angry mob and started a riot. Under the cover of night, Paul and Silas went to Berea.

We read that in Berea, they also went to preach in a synagogue. There were no riots this time. In fact, the people were eager to receive the message. But they didn’t stop at just hearing. They searched the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. The Bereans knew the Scriptures were the authority, not the interpreter.

Many Christians are starving themselves right now. They aren’t getting a steady diet of the Daily Bread. They might be counting on a few verses on Instagram to get them through the day. They listen to podcasts of sermons, but they never crack open their Bible. How can they be sure they are being taught what is right and what is true?

Friend, we need to do as the Bereans did. We need to examine the Scriptures every day to see if the message we are reading or listening to is true. But don’t take my word for it. Examine the Scriptures today and see for yourself.

Pray

Lord, Your Word is a gift that You have given to reveal Yourself to us. Help me to understand and interpret the Scriptures correctly and with sound doctrine. Amen.

The word of the Lord is so sweet. I love those words of life!
Pastor Crawford, thanks for reminding me that, "... the Scriptures were the authority, not the interpreter..." Lord Jesus, thank You for Your Word. Help me to understand rather than finding fault with its message.
Thanks for writing in! Great question! The simple answer is the Word of Faith movement promotes a false gospel. In October we begin a new series on Galatians. We will be talking about the ONE TRUE GOSPEL. As Paul said, any other gospel than the one true gospel is no gospel at all. It's not good news. For the sake of time, here's a concise evaluation of the WoF movement: https://www.gotquestions.org/Word-Faith.html
I have always checked the Scriptures to see if they back up what I hear or read in different sources and when I see that there is any discrepancies I cease listening or reading those things such as programs and certain books etc. Question: what do you believe about the "Word of Faith movement where such preachers as Rod Parsley, Kenneth Copeland and others preach some call it the Prosperity Gospel movement what does the Bible say about these?
Your Word, O God, is true. And You are the true and living God.
Amen!
I love reading the word of God. Without it, I don't feel right. I need to read it daily.
As Christ follower should be eager to receive the good news, of the new believers and set the mined set that please Jesus and God.

Thank you for sharing this suggestion. I need to read the verses I receive in my email in the entire chapter so I do not take them out of context.
Thank you for that. I’ve been a Christian most of my life. I grew up in church. True I have backsled a few times . I always come right back to god. I’ve been a reborn Christian for several years now. I’ve come to realize we have to study the Bible just as we were in school . As a mother, grandmother, wife, caregiver, I sometimes put off studying gods word. Recently I’m back into wanting to learn and study again . Please pray for me to stay in this path for good. It is indeed a commendable practice of verifying the messages with the Sctiptures so that we can understand the veracity of the messafes that we heard. That will strengthen our belief and advance our knowledge in the right direction. Thank you . It is a good teaching.
