Are You the Problem or the Solution?

August 7, 2020

Have you ever heard of the Bob principle? The Bob principle says that wherever Bob goes, there is a problem. There are issues and fighting in each place, so he leaves convinced that everyone else is the problem. What Bob fails to see is that he is really the problem.

James spoke to this in James chapter 3.

“So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell” (James 3:5-6).

It’s amazing how much destruction our words can do. Our words can encourage and help others grow in their knowledge and love of Christ. But they can also destroy like a fire. Wherever we go, we open our mouths, and it burns those around us and our own very lives.

Criticism is a fire that, if left undealt with, will destroy your relationships and even your life.

A better way of living is by asking God to take control of your words. This includes social media, your texts, the water cooler conversations, and anything in between. We don’ have the ability to control our tongue, but thankfully, God does. Ask him for help today.

Text in Context: Read James 3:1-12

Reflect: What do these three illustrations tell us about the power of our words? What is the only hope for controlling our tongue?

Respond: When do you find it easiest to criticize others? Why? How will you give God control over your tongue?

Prayer: Father, I know you are the source of all good things, including words. Help me today to be a source of life and hope through all my words. Amen.

What if you're confronting sins you see others commit? Is there a problem with that?

It is such an eaay thing to do. It takes effort not to criticize. Lord I surrender my tongue, my mind and my heart. Help me to be led by the Holy Spirit and not by my circumstance, others or my emotions. Teach me to guide my tongue, in you name I pray.
