Are You the Problem or the Solution?

August 7, 2020

Have you ever heard of the Bob principle? The Bob principle says that wherever Bob goes, there is a problem. There are issues and fighting in each place, so he leaves convinced that everyone else is the problem. What Bob fails to see is that he is really the problem.

James spoke to this in James chapter 3.

“So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell” (James 3:5-6).

It’s amazing how much destruction our words can do. Our words can encourage and help others grow in their knowledge and love of Christ. But they can also destroy like a fire. Wherever we go, we open our mouths, and it burns those around us and our own very lives.

Criticism is a fire that, if left undealt with, will destroy your relationships and even your life.

A better way of living is by asking God to take control of your words. This includes social media, your texts, the water cooler conversations, and anything in between. We don’ have the ability to control our tongue, but thankfully, God does. Ask him for help today.

Text in Context: Read James 3:1-12

Reflect: What do these three illustrations tell us about the power of our words? What is the only hope for controlling our tongue?

Respond: When do you find it easiest to criticize others? Why? How will you give God control over your tongue?

Prayer: Father, I know you are the source of all good things, including words. Help me today to be a source of life and hope through all my words. Amen.

What if you're confronting sins you see others commit? Is there a problem with that?
thy word is a lamp unto my feet and the light unto my path.
It is such an eaay thing to do. It takes effort not to criticize. Lord I surrender my tongue, my mind and my heart. Help me to be led by the Holy Spirit and not by my circumstance, others or my emotions. Teach me to guide my tongue, in you name I pray.
Yes, at sometimes in our lives we all can admit to being the problem. But. The HOLY SPIRIT will guide us to all TRUTH. If we say that GOD is OUR MASTER, then we will choose to say and do the right thing. Remember we belong to JESUS now and OUR dance partner has changed for the BETTER. GOD is ALWAYS waiting to aid HIS child who knows where HIS REAL POWER comes from. I've learned in walking close with HIM that GOD is your strength and keeper if you REALLY DESIRE to be KEPT.
This is the exact prayer I need to pray. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful prayer Pamela!!! We should All practice this verse!!! In Jesus Name!!! AMEN and AMEN!!!🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏😇😇😇😇😎Love SusieQ John and Joey too!
When do you find it easiest to criticize others? Why? How will you give God control over your tongue? Sometimes i get influence for others mostly for friends because i've just wanted to agree with them. Thanks our God i've learned to keep my mouth closed and stop my thoughts. The respect for others is a principle to take always in account and so to correct this attitude.
God is with you on this journey, study His Word and He will closely guide you. Thank you Jesus for this child searching for you.Amen
With God's help we can control our tongue.
Christ, I come to you once again to ask for your forgiveness. I have been guilty of judging my fellow man. I have been guilty of doing the work that was appointed by God to You. (James 4: 11-13) (Romans 8: 33-34) Please, forgive me for my unkind words and judgment of others. Please, guide my words and thoughts and actions towards others. Please, let me learn to forgive others as you have forgiven me. For yours is the glory and the honor and the kingdom and everything. In your name, I pray. Amen.
If you like apples would you go to a grapefruit tree to get apples no, you go to the apple tree to get appls.
Thank you for this reminder. Daily I am asking God to help me change. I am not fully there yet.
I am so thankful God has helped me to think before I speak now. I have learned that physical injuries will heal but spoken words can destroy.
I thank God every day for help me.
"Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips." Psalm 141:3 I try to remember to recite this verse before I speak.
This is something I need to work on. With God's help all is possible.
Thank God , am growing in grace and learning each day. God is my source.
Sometimes I just have to step back and really keep my mouth shut and listen. I remember my mother even telling me to keep mouth 👄 shut, and let the other person speak... Quick to listen, slow to speak..
I do criticize others at times I'd be lying if I said I didn't But I rarely speak it out loud. It's just as bad though to have those thoughts. I criticize myself more than anything constantly berating myself that's ungodly too.
When we criticize others it is usually about something in our own lives, Lord, help me to see myself as I really am.
My tongue can shoot off a nasty word in a second esp if i am mad...i have trouble controlling it in that respect
I find it easier to critcize others, when they are constantly criticizing and complaining about others. Why? Because i get so tired of hearing them, i pray that God will let the words of My mouth and the meditation of heart be acceptable and pleasing before him and man.
James 3:1-12 illustrates that our words have power over our soul and bodies. The only hope for controlling our tongue is Christ's renewal of our minds and hearts. It is easiest to criticize others when they mess up or do wrong. May God grant us divine perspectives and patience towards others.
"A word to the wise is sufficient", lets heed James' admonition! Let's make conscious, deliberate, continuous effort to ask God to take full control of our words. Let it bring "life" and not "destruction". Lord, I commit every word to You today in submission. Let my words bring love, life and healing to others for Your glory.
Lord help me in this day to resist the temptation to speak damaging and unkind words. Set a watch over my tongue and help that the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart will be acceptable in your sight oh Lord my strength and my redeemer
Dear Father, let the word of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, I beseech thee oh Lord
This is a wonderful summary prayer and I will be using it to help me in these areas.
Oh Lord, Set a watch on my mouth and my tongue. I yield myself to you. I forgive the hurts of the past and ask that you heal my heart and those around me that I have hurt. I confess and release anger and hurt. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you Lord, my strength and mg redeemer.Amen
God, please do take control of my tongue ... please use it to build up and encourage rather than destroy.
As well as myself father 😊
Father God, as you say you will order my steps in thy word Please LORD Order my tongue today to speak in accordance with righteousness, do not let my tongue boast or speak ill on no one or anything. Instead let me see the goodness and positive in all including myself in Jesus glorious name. AMEN.
Lord, help me to be a living sacrifice, laying down my life, my all in, for, and to you. Take this tongue, these lips, this mouth and everything attached that you created and help me to guard, with wisdom and discernment, what comes out of them, through your Word as my guide. It's easy to think high and holy thoughts . It's another thing to put the thoughts we have into action. Please help me to practice your presence in my life by loving you and others more....."less of me, more of Him." Father, thank you for your unfailing love, in Christ Jesus; my Savior, my Lord.
Today allow me to encourage someone and not hurt them with my words.
Lord, your word tells me that the tongue is a weapon. Thank you Lord, because I shall wield this weapon in the camp of the enemy and talk to everyone I meet about your goodness and love and cause an uproar in the kingdom of darkness. Thank you Lord.
Please pray for the Lord to help me control my tongue. I'm overwhelmed with a number of things and I'm becoming angry and my words are not encouraging. I want to be the solution not the problem. Thank you for the reminder. Denice
