A Trustworthy Testament

March 31

Read Matthew 4:1-4 (ESV)

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Do you believe the Bible to be trustworthy? Why or why not?

Sometimes when I say, “Well, the Bible says…” someone interrupts me and says, “Yeah, but how do we know that we can trust the Bible?” You may be wondering the same thing. Here at Back to the Bible, we believe that the Bible is absolutely trustworthy and true. What gives us this confidence?

First, we trust Scripture because Jesus trusted in Scripture. In today’s verses, we read of Jesus being tempted by Satan. Remember, Jesus was fully God and fully human. In His humanity, after 40 days of fasting, He was weak and hungry. He could have used His divine powers to do just as Satan suggested. He could have made the stones turn to bread. But He didn’t. Instead, Jesus trusted in God’s promise to sustain Him. He put His trust in God’s Word. He knew that turning the stones to bread may satisfy temporarily but feeding on God’s Word sustains us eternally. When Jesus was weak and desperate, He relied on Scripture.

Over the course of His ministry, Jesus repeatedly says, “It is written” and refers to books of the Old Testament Law and Prophets. In fact, he quotes Scripture from 14 different Old Testament books. From the references He made, it is clear that Jesus believed the people and events of the Old Testament Scriptures were real. For example, Jesus confirmed that Abraham was a real man in John 8:56 when He said, “Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.”

As we read the Gospels, it is obvious that Jesus placed His complete trust in Old Testament Scripture and considered it to be the Word of God. But what about the New Testament? Well, we have to consider it the same way we consider any other historical document. When scholars study ancient texts, they look for eyewitness accounts. An ancient text carries more evidential weight if it was written by an actual eyewitness. The early church fathers did not debate the authorship of the four Gospels. They were in agreement that those Gospels were either written by eyewitnesses themselves (the disciples Matthew and John) or they were written based on eyewitness testimony (Mark and Luke).

In addition, the four Gospels often corroborate each other. The authors wrote from different perspectives and included varying degrees of detail but they often described the same event without discrediting each other. Each eyewitness brought a different piece to the puzzle that fits together to create a complete picture of what exactly happened.

Friends, the Bible stands up to the test. It is trustworthy and true. As Psalm 119:160 says, “The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.” Praise God!

Lord, I praise You because Your Word is good and true! Thank You for revealing the truth to us so that we can stand on a firm foundation and know the truth about You. Amen.

I am committed to Your Word Lord Jesus and Your Word is true. Your Word always comes to pass. Your Word endures throughout many generations. And because Your Word is written, the Bible is true.
The Bible is the only absolute truth known to humankind. Read this first. God's truth will win when put against the world's lies.
Jesus rook on himself of a man to be temped by the Devil, Jesus uses scripture, so can we use scripture when we are tempted/
Great reading; thank you!
Thank you Jesus

If a traveler is walking along the side of a highway and I pull over to offer the person a ride and the same one gets in my auto without removing his/her backpack this one is not going to get any rest from the load of the backpack. Sin must become very uncomfortable before anyone is ready to unload. The heart has to have grown tired of the load of the brain’s many warnings that we are growing weary of the walk that always leads to defeat and the yearnings of a broken heart. Stubbornness is iniquity and leads to more sinfulness. The brokenness of the heart must become submissive to what the word (gospel) of God offers
The Word of God is stronger and sharper than a two edged sword. Able to divide between bone and marrow, the thoughts and motives of the heart! This is why memorizing scripture verses is so important. When Jesus was tempted He quoted scripture...and as I say if it is good enough for Jesus it is good enough for Me/Us! Blessings, J
When people ask me how I know the Bible is real or if God is real, I always tell them, I have faith and I believe - I mean c'mon, look at all the wonders around us, look at you, how do you think you got here. Further, I always tell them I would rather believe in God (because of all He does for me) and take my chances than NOT believe and then at the end be in awe the way the Soldiers were when Jesus was crucified and the sky turned black. Not just be in awe, but to realize that my chance of believing no longer exists because it's too late. My prayer is always for those who do not know God and also for those who do, but have turned away from Him.
When folks ask me, “how do you know the Bible is true and not just a collection of fables?, I often initially respond with a question - “How does one know that he or she is really in love?” Yes, there are certainly many ancient writings (non-canonical) that attest to historical accuracy of portions of “The Bible,” and a scientific approach to validation, but I suggest that’s not the central theme of our faith and trust in the Bible as the sole source of profound Truth. Rather, it is our love of Jesus Christ that fuels our ardent belief and trust. That is, trust in the Word of God as expressed and given to us in the gospels, teachings, experiences, prophesies, and creation itself which the Bible captures AND, in our time, the Holy Spirit helps us understand and internalize. Friends, you cannot fully love Jesus Christ and not trust that the Bible is anything except the truthful Word of God... So just as we trust the word of the ones we profoundly love here on earth to tell us the “truth,” SO MUCH MORE do we completely trust the Word of Jesus Christ and His use of ancient scripture as we know it - The Bible.
Thanks Pastor Nat, I’m not a very good debater . These are indeed good approaches anytime . I will be happy to use them when the opportunity arrives. I hope you notice I say “when” . I don’t think I’m ever going to be able to debate someone into believing, however it will give my witness more authority.
Father You have shown us through Your Son, Jesus that Your Word is true and we can believe it, have faith in it, trust it, live by it, study it, repeat it with confidence, and teach others of it. So , instead of us going around debating and doubting whether the Bible is true, we should study it and get to know what it says and trust and believe it. The Word is God and is True. Glory to God. Amen.
Thanks most high God for keeping me and my family amen
Pastor Nat, thank you for your obedience in sharing these very helpful lessons.
Thank you, Lord. You have been so good to me. Amen.
Jesus we 💕💕💕 you ❤️❤️❤️
Jesus please help us 🙏🙏🙏
Praise Jehovah. Glorify Jesus Christ. God's word is true and just, and as David said, God holds His word high above his name! May it stay in our hearts and conform us to Jesus' image more and more.
God revels himself to us in his creation and in his word. Our hearts are empty without the knowledge and beauty of God. The Bible opens our eyes to God’s beauty and truth. It is sharper than a two edged sword piercing our hearts so we can see and know who Jesus is and how much he loves us by dying on the cross for us. Heaven and earth will pass away but my word will live forever. Thank you Lord for your word it is the rock for which we stand. Amen
Glory be to God. Truth...Amen, by the grace and help of God through Christ.
Because the Bible is good and true, I rely on its wisdom for guidance for every part of my life! Thank you Pastor for an enlightening devotional!
