A Happy Moment
September 8
Read Psalm 16:9-10
Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay. You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
Reflect
Do you notice and enjoy happy moments throughout your day?
There is a video circulating online in which an elderly woman is drinking a cup of tea and sharing her family’s tradition of stopping to notice the good gifts of God. Whenever her family is together, enjoying each other’s company, she says, “You know what this is?” and they all say, “This is a happy moment.”
What a great way to practice counting our blessings and to teach our family to do the same. In Psalm 16, David is praising God for the blessings he experiences now because he knows the Lord. In verse 2, he says, “I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.” Every good thing, every happy moment is from the LORD. God has given us many good gifts here on earth, but we sometimes miss them because we are so distracted and caught up in our troubles and endless activities. We need to pay attention and enjoy those moments because they are fleeting.
The best news? The happy moments that are fleeting here on earth are just a glimpse of the happy moments that await us in eternity. In verses 9-10, David goes on to proclaim that he knows God will rescue him from death. He knows that “eternal pleasures” are in his future. Happy moments that aren’t fleeting but are endless are awaiting him.
Friends, I encourage you to be on the lookout for happy moments today. But if you are having a hard time because happy moments are few and far between, take heart. Eternal pleasures and endless joy await you in His presence. Something to look forward to!
Pray
LORD, thank You for happy moments. You are the Giver of every good thing. But thank You even more for the hope of everlasting joy that awaits us in Your presence. Amen.
