Victory O’er the Grave
O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan’s tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save,
And give them victory o’er the grave.
~from “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”
With the very first sin in the Garden of Eden, Death arrived on the scene. He has been a formidable foe ever since. In fact, his military record is second to none—he has won each and every battle that man has wagered against him. Death takes no prisoners, only casualties. Death is always victor.
Until Jesus, that is.
Through the work of Jesus on the cross, the strength of the great enemy Death has been vanquished. “‘O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?’ The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:55–57).
Death no longer wins. Jesus is victor!
